Yeay! Barcelona GP here we come!

AndyC 22 March 2005 13:20:04
Got the girlfriend interested in F1, then put THE question*

So now we're going to Barcelona.

Any tips from visiting veterans?

Regards,
AndyC

* The question being "Fancy actually going to a GP?"

I've not been to the GP but if you get the chance to go into the city,
there are some nice places to go just off the beaten track. My favourite
restaurant in Barca is on Carrer St Pau, which is down the bottom of the
Ramblas, on the right as you go down. It's almost at the far end of
Carrer St Pau not far from Metro Paral.lel - admittedly the bit in
between looks a bit dodgy cos you're walking past the Barri Xines but
it's ok, there's a lot of youth hostels down that street. The restaurant
is called Caleuche, no. 116 (I still have their card :). Keep

I didn't think much of the Rambla - too much touristy stuff - but the
Barri Gotic (on the left as you go down) is quite interesting, and the
architecture around Passeig de Gracia is pretty cool, if you like that
kind of thing.

It's a pizza restaurant, Patagonian style (South American). Bear in mind
that my opinion of the food was influenced somewhat by budget (small)
and my opinion of the waitress ;). It was very good though, and didn't
involve being patronised - I hated the fact that all the places we went
into on the Ramblas had menus in foreign languages and smarmy waiters
who automatically assumed that I couldn't speak Spanish before I'd
opened my mouth. And the Ramblas is overpriced, foodwise.

According to a Brazilian website I found
(http://juliana-vale.blog.uol.com.br/arch2005-02-01_2005-02-28.html)
Caleuche has a bad habit of closing on holiday weekends but they
recommend it anyway, and if it's closed there are other places around
Paral.lel, especially if you wander up towards Metro Paral.lel and take
a right. There's another restaurant on the left hand side of that big
road that serves tostadas, which are typical Catalan food involving
large pieces of toasted bread with different types of meat - good, but
more of an acquired taste than Caleuche, and I don't remember the name.
And there's a few other places around there that were a bit more expensive.

Well, it's 12 years since we went but, IMO, it's an enjoyable circuit
to watch at, apart from the race usually being one of the most boring
of the year. Best place to watch is still the grandstand by Turn 1,
but don't expect any passes of the calibre of that by Mansell on Senna
there (unfortunately not the year we went). Walk the circuit before
the race - there are some other good vantage points to watch practice
from. Don't even bother thinking about trying to sneak into the
paddock though - it's in the middle of the circuit and jackbooted
guards prevent access.

Enjoy (so far it looks like everyone bar Schufosi have a much better
chance of that than for some years). You gonna put the other big
question if she likes it...?

Yeah, "Fancy a trip to Spa to watch the GT racing?"...

Probably would need a diamond encrusted ring to get her to agree to that ;o)

Trade her in on one that will go for the sheer pleasure of your
company.
