OT: Pimp my ride?

Simon 19 March 2005 13:19:19
Hi all I sometime watch pimp my ride, I don't like what they do to the cars
but I do enjoy the show.
A lot of the cars in the show are in such poor condition that they are quite
obviously a danger to the people who drive them and other road users. It
would be illegal to drive a car in anything approaching that condition on UK
roads. My question is this, are the laws regarding cars much slacker in the
US or are these people driving illegally, is this one of the reasons that US
roads are much more dangerous than UK roads?

There are 50 states, 10 Canadian proivinces, and a few other
jurisdictions. Each one has different rules. Some require annual safety
and emissions inspections, some just one of the two, and some neither.
Back in Alberta I could drive any old piece of junk - I once had a 20
year-old Toyota Corona that had more rust holes in it than a cheese
grater, tires worn through to the cords and an exhaust pipe connected
to the manifold with a soup can and hose clamps.

However, in most places the police can order a car off the road and
fine you if it is demonstrably unsafe.

Big Brother's reach is a little more limited in most of North America,
thankfully.

As to the claim that US roads are more dangerous, I say: present some
proof. Roads in the US are typically wider, straighter and less
crowded, hence much safer.

If it please your honour, I submit for the prosecution, that however
wide and straight the road, sharing it with thousands of sleeping
Floridian retirees behind the wheel of cruise-controlled SUVs is
intrinsically dangerous... :-)

I did a quick google http://www.safespeed.org.uk/international3.html
The roads in the US may be wider and straighter but it looks like the
drivers aren't as well trained.
As you say though America is a big place and the ability of drivers probably
varies quite widely.

The roads are probably safer. The other people using them, well, that's
another story...

But, hey, you should come to the Middle East if you want to see a
roadborne bloodbath.

Depends on the state: There's a southern state in which a Porsche 917
has been licensed for road use, Alabama, I think.

I'm not fishing, after seeing the program I became curious and looked for
road safety statistics, according to those statistics US roads are about
twice as dangerous as UK roads. If you have something more definitive I'll
be happy to agree with you, however a simple denial doesn't really count.

The terrain varies widely also. It takes about 6 hours to travel from one
end of my county to the other end at 65 mph and in between we have
everything from dense urban areas to wide open deserts and mountain
ranges over 11,000 ft high. The state highways in this county run the
gamut from below sea level in a few desert locales to above 10,000 ft at
Onyx Summit near Big Bear Lake.

If you're interested and want to take a look, check out the California
Highway Patrol's website for a live look at their logs:
http://cad.chp.ca.gov/

It's a Saturday night and a good part of the state is experiencing a
pretty good winter storm, so it'll probably be an active time to look at
the logs. If it's like most Saturday nights, the majority of
serious/fatal accidents will be caused by alcohol and/or driver
stupidity.

...So?

Without normalizing for several significant factors how can a
conclusion as to the relative safety of US highways vs UK roads of
similar speed, traffic mix, commercial utilization and general
character, be determined with any validity?

Is 'pimp' the same as 'whip'?

Saw a trailer for a programme called Unique Whips while watching the
Speed coverage of Sebring - sounded kinky to me...

pimp means to trick out. pimp being an allusion to pimps{hos bosses} who
like to be ostentatiously flashy.

Surely a pimp is a lowlife who takes money from prostitutes.

Er, thanks for that but you didn't actually answer my question!

...Indeed in many cultures they are, in others, not so much.
