Qualifying Format: Other Options?

Matt 8 March 2005 04:50:46
The new qualifying format has pretty much been declared a complete failure,
however seeing as the rule makers seem intent on some form of one lap
qualifying what can be done?

Suggestion #1 - Inclement Weather Rule
Track conditions do change even in the dry, but especially in the wet you'll
never get a level playing field for all 20 drivers. I'd propose (although
wasting my breath) that in inclement weather the qualifying sessions become
a 1 hour session with all drivers being allowed 4 timed laps (which with in
and out laps I suppose would be 12 laps total). That way conditions would be
as near equal as possible, and the one that makes the best of the conditions
is on pole.

Suggestion #2 - General Suggestion
In lieu of what I mentioned earlier, that some kind of one lap qualifying
would be retained, how about make the Saturday session a traditional one lap
session and the sunday the shoot out. So Ignoring my first suggestion - wet
or dry, hopefully with 12 laps you'd see the best each driver can do, and if
it rains on Sunday morning well at least there was a build up even if
someone ends up like poor Massa etc..

With both combine the times I don't care - they don't seem to.

PS One point of congratulations for the rule makers is the revised start
system - about time after all that build up and a warmup lap that someone
just made them go around again for a simple stalled car or one with a
pushable problem!

Regards,
Matt

Just scrap the whole 'sunday' qualifying format. It's stupid. It's bad for
spectators on Saturday since nothing is decided. Many TV channels will not
carry the qual or will tape delay it. It's bad for the spectators on Sunday
since you now have to get up an hour earlier (or more) to watch the final
qualifier.

I have said it before and I will say it again, they should go to a single
session, 2 (maybe 3) flying lap format. The 3 lap would probably work well
on the shorter tracks but the longer tracks would probably go over time. The
whole session will fit in to 1.5 hours, giving more exposure to every one. I
don't particularly mind the race-fuel-load rule but it's nice to see what
can be done running on fumes, either way works fine for me.

Oh I agree totally (Sunday IS rubbish), but it seems obvious that someone in
the heirarchy wants single lap qualifying - I expect it has to do with TV
Time.

Shouldn't that be 15 of 18, about to be 15 of 19?
_Remove_ pit speed limits - they're antithetical to the concept of> "racing"

They're pretty damned important for the concept of "racing without
killing people".
place "a much higher 'tariff'" on sloppy execution.

All the dead people would be quite a penalty, what with all the
politicians racing to see who can ban F1 the quickest.
