'appy vs happy?

Captain 7 March 2005 19:28:43
Question for the group (who watch ITV's F1 broadcast):

Does anyone get tired of Martin Brundle poking fun at the way Fisichella
speaks English? Maybe ITV-F1 should put a new poll on their website:

How many times should Martin make fun of Fisichella's accent in one race
weekend?

- 1 time
- once after qualifying, then once during the race
- twice, plus one extra time if he wins
- anytime Fisichella says anything

Quote from Martin Brundle, Aus GP 2005 (regarding Fisichella's
pronunciation of the word 'happy'): "One of these days we'll get him to
stick an 'h' in there".

Hey Martin, my challenge to you is to say the following words on the
next broadcast:

"figlio", "puttana", "gnocchi", "castagne", "Giancarlo" (this last one
should be a freebie!)

Most of the French drivers say Appy, just think of Allo Allo. In fact a lot
of continental Europe say Appy rather than happy and so do the South
Americans.

I can do all those. :)
One thing though, i always thought Giancarlo is pronounced
'geehuncarlo', in oter words the 'i' is not lost, but our TV guys all
kept saying 'junkarlo'. Am i right or are they right ?

Not as much as Allen's ineffective (and wrong) pronounciation of
"Michelin." There's no 'T' in there, James!

Piece of cake. . .<g>

They're right. The "i" isn't really pronounced, it just serves to make
the "g" soft, as in 'genie, gees, gesture...'
'junkarlo' is closest to the Italian pronounciation, but not 'exact.'
There's a small 'pause,' as in: jun-karlo.

'Gian' is one syllable. In much the same way as 'yon' us is one syllable.

Martin's being an idiot here.

Since I was actually at the track, I havnt watched the TV broadcast
yet, but if Fisi's radio comms (457.1500 Mhz) were broadcast at the
end of the race, you would have heard him say he was "really happy"
WITH a 'h'.

Warning! Warning! Sense of humour failure detected in this thread!

It's been a running joke for years that Fissi was always 'appy, why are
you getting so worked up about it now?

Emma - the fact that it has been a "joke for years" doesn't make it
funny, does it?
Because, as humour it barely works the first time. Repeatedly, it> becomes abusive. And it reflects poorly on Martin, for whom I have a> good deal of respect, making Martin the butt of the joke rather than> Giancarlo.

That's more the problem - I do have a sense of humour, but there is a
line between good taste and bad taste. And yes, I did hear Fisi say
'happy' on the radio (it was broadcast), but he also did say 'appy later
on (post-race interview possibly?).

I don't really care much for James Allen, but Martin Brundle provides
such great insight and (generally) unbiased commentary, it seems silly
for him to make immature comments about drivers. This is international
motorsport, not "lets make fun of others" hour.

I do not want to generalize about Martin, but I have heard him make
similar comments about other drivers in the past - I left this out of my
original post because I can not cite any particular references. The
Fisichella comments I have heard more than once, however.

Well it made me smile but then I don't tend to take offence on other
peoples behalf.

Why don't you write to Giancarlo and ask his opinion about it. While
you're at it write to Martin Brundle too, I'm sure he'll be 'appy to
hear from you.

Well, as a viewer of his broadcast, I guess I'm offended. The "joke" is
in poor taste.

Shouldn't that be "Gee-ann-carr-low"?
