A pretty crappy 2005 season opener race

Dariusz 6 March 2005 15:03:05
Now I know that I support Michael Schumacher, but this rant isn't about his
or Ferrari's performance today (although Rubens did brilliantly to get
second), but really the whole race in general... or could it really be
called a race any more?

People have said of past seasons that it looks like a procession, but these
new rules IMO really do make the "race" look like one long procession. The
drivers afraid to push incase they wear their tyres out, and if they don't
care about the tyres, then they're worrying about the engine that has to
last two races.

The aggrigate times for qualifying sucks, there is no "fun" in watching
either qualifying runs any more. Also, the "one shot" qualifying runs
sucks, bring back the 12 lap, much better for all viewers, even if the
drivers occasionally complained of traffic. It's been reduced from who can
run a great lap to who can run an average lap but also catches good
weather, no gusts of wind / driest track in between rain showers etc.
(also shown up in last years qualications).

Why don't the FIA for once butt out of making stupid rule changes, this has
taken us back to the "boring" 1980's... at least they had turbos in them
days so they could do x amount of overtaking manouvers if they needed it.

In the 80's we had tyre changes but no fuel changes, now we have fuel
top-up's but no tyre changes. At least with the former, you could charge
as fast as you liked and were rewarded if your engine didn't burn fuel at
the rate of knots.

To add to the stupidity, you can't add fuel to the car _IF_ a tyre needs
changing, you have to come in seperately for a fuel stop.

It was interesting that on the grid walk before the race, Martin Brundle
(for ITV-UK tv) said that he had heard of "clarification" of some tyre
rules about changes etc. This should all have been sorted out weeks ago,
not just before a race.

What a sorry state the FIA have got F1 into.

I'll wait for a few GPs with balanced wheather conditions, before I judge
this season.

ROTFLMAO what are you going to say when the new rules actually benefit MS
which they certainly will when the weather isn't a factor i.e. most races. I
can't wait to read it...

Yes bring back the old system DC prefers it.>
All drivers do and at least Frank Williams does. We have had the
opportunity to listen to all the drivers talk about this over our full
weekend telecast, and it's unanimous. They all hate the qualifying
format and they are not exactly happy with the other rules either.
Mosley frolicks around making changes in the name of safety and
economics. To comply with these, the teams are spending more than ever
and the cars will not be any safer than they already were, *IF* they
will actually race each other and not be saving the engine or tyres..

Firstly, I think the weather has played a part more often than that...
not to the extent that it did on Saturday, obviously, but it only needs
a few degrees change in the temperature, or a little bit of moisture, a
slightly damp track that dries through qualifying, etc.

And it's not just weather that affects it - what if the driver that
goes out before you spills oil on the track? Has a crash and there is a
break to clean up the damage? A driver returning very slowly from their
flying lap getting in the way? There are a lot of variables beside
weather that can affect the performance over a single lap.

ummm, Bryan I think you'll find that there aren't too many fans of the
new qualifying when conditions are highly variable, period. Sure it is
nice to see the one-shot, its now or never qualifying, but what happened
to Massa was terrible, he should get honorary pole just for not having
fallen off the track!

I am a big Ferrari fan (don't really care which driver wins for them),
but I'm pretty sure I don't like any qualifying system that is unfair on
a single weekend. The idea that "it will even out over the season" goes
against the concept of a race weekend for me - each race weekend should
be an independent event, with points tallied over the season.

For example, if Michael is able to beat the crap out of his engine in
Malaysia, and takes the win over Renault who have used engines, I won't
like it. Everyone should have a clean slate and the same chance to win
each race.

Bryan,

I don't think you read my post very carefully, look again. It may not be
a common thing, but I am (or hope to be) one of the tifosi, a fan of the
team (I have been since I was a young boy, and MS was a a slightly older
boy!). When the cars from Maranello win, I am happy. If Italian
drivers win, I am also happy (particularly Fisichella, of whom I have
always been a big fan) although it does hurt a bit that they are
driving a Renault!
