Well, let's see. Lots of Brits in ras.f1. Let's see how popular oval
racing has become there, shall we?

What's oval racing? I watch cricket when I go to The Oval.

Cheers,

I love oval racing, stayed up until the early hours last weekend to
watch the Nascar Busch race from Fontana and have just re-subbed to Sky
Sports in time for this weekend's IRL race. Just wish they'd also show
the Grandam championship!

But that's not really what you wanted to hear when you cross posted this
troll, was it?

Yes.

Formula 3 is a mix of "Formula Pushy Dad" youngsters, underfunded
no-hopers who can't afford a full season, and tuggers in "Scholarship
Class" cars. Formula Ford went crap when it acquired slick tyres and
heavy Zetec engines. Formula BMW is for arrogant, charisma-free whiny
teenagers who believe that if you've got a big hospitality facility
you're a Real Racing Driver and must scowl at the public and not
overtake. Formula Renault is just about holding its own as the only
decent mainstream single-seater category.

On the clubbie scene, there is some excellent single-seater racing -
FFord 1600, Monoposto (which essentially lets any smallish single seater
in) etc. But mainstream single-seater racing? Nobody cares. F3 races are
an excuse to go for a pie and a pint when they're on the bill with the
GT championship.

Suffered from injury problems (another one announced this morning).
Where would Ireland be if you couldn't field O'Driscoll, O'Gara, and
half your first choice forwards?

Anyway, the best game of the weekend wasn't at Landsdowne Road. Wales
for the Grand Slam!

You didn't say "advertised"; you said "it's receiving quite a bit of

Obviously, Sky isn't going to dump a lot of their ad budget into an IRL

Its very responsive. NASCAR probably defines oval racing in the UK as
much as it is the defining oval racing body in North America. Open
wheel would hardly qualify as a support race to NASCAR.

I posted my experiences as a "Brit in ras.f1" who likes at least three
series which race on ovals. How much more response did you require from
each of us?

I didn't solicit an "each"response. I asked: "Let's see how popular oval
racing has become there [England], shall we?" Thanks to your response,
we now now there's at least one oval fan in England, but I'm looking for
a broader brush.

Is the IRL race receiving "quite a bit of promotion", by an honest
assessment, in England?

So you now agree with Emma that you like oval racing. That's two. The
discussion is about how popular oval racing is in England.

Is the British Grand Prix likely to be placed atop the Rockingham oval,

Why should it be?

Nothing wrong with oval racing, ISTR being mesmerized by Nigel driving
the ovals in CART... like all open-wheel racing the fascination is in
watching how the race develops, not the number of times driver x
overtakes driver y. In the same way street and non-oval races are
fascinating to watch (even Monaco).

If it is popular in the UK, that would raise the number of countries> for that to . . . um, one.>
The IRL is not all that popular in Canada either. TSN treats it like Sky
Digital in the UK, more or less filler. Sometimes they don't show the
races when they're on ESPN through TSN at all, sometimes they show them 2
days later during the afternoon. Now that Patrick Carpentier is in the
IRL and the series is holding road races, that will no doubt change.

Canada has 3 Champcar races that are well attended, the IRL has none.

On a different note, I understand that NASCAR might be coming to Circuit
Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, which should raise the profile of that
growing sport. France's old man used to consider Watkins Glen as a
Canadian race, but now that Nextel is the chief sponsor and not Winston,
Nextel (a telecom company) wants exposure outside of the USA, while Winston
was only concerned about domestic American races.

The IRL once considered racing at Mosport back in 1997 on an road course
oval, but that never came about because the track was purchased by Dr. Don
Panoz.

No. I've seen a couple of TV adverts for it, but no more than simply to
inform the tiny minority of motorsport fans who subscribe to Sky
Football... erm... I mean, Sky Sports, that they're showing something
for us for a change. I wouldn't exactly describe that as "quite a bit",
and frankly, it'd be hard pushed to be described as "promotion".

In fact, the audience for IRL is so tiny here, it's unmeasurable (except > by Sky - and they won't publicly release the figures). It's cheap time > filler programming.

That's funny -- last year in the USA, average IRL IndyCar Series viewership
was 881,475.
The 2nd last race of the year at California did a *whopping* 0.1 share on
ESPN -- that's 102,200 households.. out of a nation of how many?!!

That would be hilarious if there were more Brits watching IRL than in
America!

Do they include video recorders as viewers though???

Video/DVD recorders have been built into the BARB figures for over a
decade - though it's still highly researched guesswork.

Cheers,
Probert.
