As you were! A quick dekko at other pics on the McLaren site reveals
that the logo on the side pod reads "Juan Pablo".

Presumably a brand of natural tranquiliser from South America.

So, assuming that the JW deal is really just a relatively minor one, any > ideas on who will be occupying the sidepod spaces and rear wings > post-West?>
I seem to recall that West is still paying McLaren for the rest of the year,
but allowing the name to be removed. But IIRC there was something about the
car still being associated with West? Staying Silver and Black would fulfil
this agreement I believe?

Ohh, Another Cheshirite (SP). Maybe I've bumped into you at Oulton Park
sometime?

Er...sort of...possibly. The theory of the F1 Racing magazine fantasy
article was centred, very loosely, on the idea of Imperial Tobacco being
willing to cough up [no pun intended] half a season's worth of dosh for
a very loose association between a golden colour scheme and their JPS
brand. It sounded very far-fetched to me as I read it. If anything, the
colour scheme of the car as shown reminded me more of the Jordan Benson
& Hedges scheme of 1996.

The silver and black scheme used by McLaren from 1997 onwards is _not_ a
West one at all, the West house colours really being red & white. It is
actually a colour scheme devised by McLaren Mercedes themselves, with
deliberately placed white bits on the sidepods and rear wing which would
accept any sponsorship package. (Remember that the same scheme was run
by the F3000 'Junior' team after the West branding had been replaced by
SAP sponsorship.)

Having said that, there would perhaps be something in it for Imperial if
the remainder of the season was run with the drivers names appearing
with quasi-West flashes, as they have done for tobacco-free events already.
Ohh, Another Cheshirite (SP). Maybe I've bumped into you at Oulton Park >sometime?>
I think the correct word is actually Cestrian, but I think your word is
better. I doubt it regarding Oulton Park though; Sad to say, the last
time I was there to watch a race was 1978...
