It's not so much a case of refined aerodynamics as refined rules - most
of the changes they might choose to make, given a free hand, would
involve putting bodywork where it isn't allowed.

Thanks. I find all of the bizarre undulations and
shaping of the current batch of F1 wings to be
uhhh....interesting.

I love to know how they got there from a straight
wing, and whether they ever start from scratch or
if every wing is a tweaking of the previous
super-complex humpbacked aerofoil.

There was a point between the simple
connect-the-dots designs of the late 80's and now
where F1 cars were curvy and sexy, but currently
they're transgendered strippers with too much body
jewelry.

I'm not sure I want to know!

Yet another example of things an engineer might have to say with a
straight face... (I think there's a list on the net somewhere)

Only the latter Testarossa supports your point.

If you can't see the beauty in the others you were raised to believe
MGs were technologically advanced and TVRs are sensuous.

I've seen one on the road... I thought I didn't like the 575 much (that
airscoop didn't really do anything for me) but against the 612 it looks
gorgeous.

Yes, but what were the last things we had? The 'Walrus' didn't work. The
double keel is unclear. Maybe be winglets on the sidepods, evolution of the
banned X-wings? when did they appear? 1997? if not we shoudl move back to
the 'shark' nose with teh Tyrrell.... so we shoudl espect something like 2
'big' changes a decade? :(

I love my pretentious, ugly Testarossa. And my local Ferrari club has
an F-40. And if you find an F-40 offensive, it is truly your loss. I
am fortunate to drive one on occasion, but not enough to own one. It
is a truly intoxicating car.

I don't "get" the current Maseratis at all, TBH. Too heavy around the
haunches, too droopy front and rear. Wrong stance, somehow. No amount of
19" alloys and body jewellery can rectify that IMO. They need to go on a
diet, as it were.

The battle of the ugly cars, international division.

Undisputed winner : France.
Runners-up (ex-aequo) : England and the USA

The MGA was unfinished in design and engineering, and the Griffith in> both design and construction.

I was only concerned with their looks. There's a harmony, simplicity and
balance in the lines and stance of both which was never equalled by
their successors. The MGA could easily have worn an Alfa grille, and the
Griffith might've looked good with a trident on the front (and a V12
under the bonnet)?

Not jus aerodynamic, but just a 'new' concept.: pneumatic valvles, berylium,
6-wheels, no clutch pedal, fans, double chassis... some that made the cars
different between them.

These days, the new concepts are mostly stuff you can't see, and that no
one wants to talk about, at least not specifically. Ross Brawn has
referred to Ferrari's advantage as being in transients, during corner
entry and exit, and better understanding of how the suspension behaves,
and how the car handles the instantaneous weight transfer, as well as
some understanding of the aerodynamics. What he hasn't done is explain
their working methods in detail or what they mean by transient
aerodynamic work (which is fairly cutting edge, whether it be F1 or road
cars or planes or anything, because it's difficult to acquire good data
from a moving model).
