Max: 'F1 needs salary caps and an age limit'

Capping drivers' salaries and imposing an age limit are just two of
Max Mosley's most recent suggestions about how Formula One teams can
save money.

Mosley put forward these suggestions to the ten teams in a letter that
was sent to them last week.

The FIA President's ideas will be discussed at a meeting on Friday.
However, there's a possibility that only Ferrari will be present, as
the other nine teams may not pitch after their request for a
postponement was denied.

According to Reuters the agenda for the meeting will include ideas put
forward by not only the FIA but also four teams - BAR, Ferrari,
Renault and Williams. Those teams were the only ones who responded to
a request for suggestions.

However, while it's not known what suggestions the teams made, Mosley
has already revealed some of his proposals.

Not only does he want to see salaries capped but he'd also like an age
limit for second drivers. Ferrari's Michael Schumacher reported earns
around $50 million a year and recently turned 36. However, the age
limit would not apply to him as he's the team's number one driver.

Mosley told the teams in his covering letter that "at this stage each
of these measures is an item for discussion rather than a proposal."

"Early implementation of cost-saving measures is highly desirable in
order to achieve financial stability in the interests of all
competitors, but particularly the independent teams."

"It is certainly possible to reduce costs drastically without altering
the look, sound or (public) technical appeal of Formula One."

"Increased income combined with very significant cost reductions will
make all properly-managed Formula One teams profitable. This will
preserve what we have and enable new teams to enter and compete with
the best."

Formula One teams should NOT be profitable, that's one of the major
problems in F1 right now: Teams like Williams and McLaren are not
competitive because funds are diverted from sport to personal
accounts.

An age limit of any kind is the most stupid idea yet. It shouldn't apply to
schumacher nor should it apply to anyone.

I always said Mad Max was on a planet of his very own. Salary caps would
act to make the driver market more fair, maybe, but they wouldn't cut
costs - there aren't enough seats for the drivers to be able to demand
as much as they like, and some of them pay the team to drive anyway. I
have no idea how he thinks an age limit would change anything, and I
don't understand how they intend to apply it if number 1 drivers are
excluded - surely the teams will just make their oldest driver "number
1" even if it actually means the opposite in practice.

While I can see the logic behind a salary cap, I have no idea why he
feels that F1 need a salary cap. If anything, they get them younger and
younger these days.

That's not fair - you took my quote out of context. It only works if Max (&
Bernie) are included in the age limit..

Bernie & Max sold their souls to the devil a long time ago so they're

I've just read David Coulthard's diary entry for that incident (from the
book that follows his whole 1998 season), interesting reminder of how MS
& Ferrari handled the aftermath.
