65 Mustang Power Steering with Air

Chris 22 March 2005 02:09:15
Hoping someone can help me with this, just converted my 65 convertible
from Manual to Power steering. The car has factory air, I can't
figure out how the pump mounts, the pulley won't line up with either
of the crank pulleys. Here is how its mounted:
The PS braket is on top of the Compressor bracket and uses two bolts
which actually go into the head. The other two bolts go into the
water pump and I needed about a 1/2 inch spacer betweent the bracket
and water pump to get a good fit. The pump needs to go toward the
rear of the car about 3/8 inch to align with the middle grove on the
crank/water pump. The most forward grove goes to the A/C compressor.

Does anyone know what im doing wrong here? I can think of two
possibilites:

1) I could remove the A/C compressor bracket and the PS would line up
perfectly with the middle grove, problem is the A/C would no longer
line up with the most forward grove.
2) Maybe I need a different pulley which sweeps rearward about 3/8",
if one exists?

Maybe some kind soul could email me a detailed picture of their
setup??

Thanks,
Chris

Why don't you Google? You can find plenty.

The PS pump should have a single groove pulley on
it. There is one belt for the AC, and one for the PS.
The PS belt sits behind the AC belt. Are you sure
you have the correct bracket?

The power steering pump should mount below the compressor. Three belts. A/C
towards the front of the car. the power steering pump belt should go around
the crank pulley and over the water pump pulley. The alternator also goes
around the water pump pulley. You should have three grooves on the crank
pulley, two on the water pump and one each on the P/S pump, alternator, and
A/C pump (stock). The A/C belt goes around the crank at the outermost pulley
around an idler pulley to clear the water pump (also used for belt tension
adjustment) and to the compressor.

You can adjust the alignment to a degree by moving the pully on the pump.
It's pressed on so you either need a power steering pulley puller (say that
fast three times), available at Kragens or a homemade installer made with a
bolt threaded into the shaft and a nut and washer/spacer to "press" the
pulley on some more. It should be able to move 3/8" if it isn't already all
the way back. Under no circumstances should you try to use a hammer to push
it back some more as it will damage the pump. Pressing it on is easier when
you have the belt installed and under tension and it also helps you see when
it aligns.

Mark,
Thanks, I was able to get it all together, as you said, the key is
mounting the PS Bracket underneath the AC Bracket, I was trying to
mount it on top of the A/C bracket......
