Speed limits reflect the 85th? not hardly

Nate Nagel 9 May 2005 06:29:15
Just got back from a swap meet in Indiana; saw something amazing
today... bumper to bumper traffic on I-70 all the way from the I-68
split (where I joined it after detouring south to Morgantown to avoid
the PA turnpike) to I-270 in Frederick... for the most part the fast
lane was doing close to 80 MPH with the slow lane at about 75. Every
time we went into a dip I could see a line of cars in front of me
stretching as far as it was possible to see, all bumper to bumper.

So who was it again that said that speed limits had some resemblance to
actual travel speeds and/or max safe travel speeds?

nate

(not complaining mind you, except for the bit where everyone jammed on
their brakes 'cause some guy was changing a tire...)

"Bumper to Bumper" travelling at 80 miles per hour is very foolish-
that's hardly a two second following distance.

So, is bumper to bumper travelling at 55 mph considered prudent?

So, is bumper to bumper travelling at 55 mph considered prudent?

No, of course not. But bumper to bumper at 80 miles per hour is even
more dangerous.

How? the speed differential between cars is still the same (zero, or
<=5 MPH between lanes)

My original point was not commenting on following distance, but merely
showing that high speed travel and 90+% road utilization are not
mutually exclusive, if everyone's working toward a common goal (i.e.
getting to one's destination in a rapid manner)
