New Commuter Lot Open in West Springfield; Helping Commuters through> Mixing Bowl Construction>

The Virginia Department of Transportation today opened a new> 223-space commuter lot on Gambrill Road, conveniently located just a> half-mile from the I-95 HOV lanes in Springfield.>

В“Commuters who live in West Springfield now have an ideal location to> park and share a ride to the I-95 HOV lanes or take a Fairfax> Connector bus to the Metro,В” said Dennis Morrison, VDOT District> Administrator.>

The commuter lot was built as part of VDOTВ’s effort to provide more> parking for commuters wanting to rideshare to avoid delays during the> reconstruction of the Springfield Interchange. Since the Mixing Bowl> construction started in 1999, VDOT and the Department of Rail and> Public Transportation have opened more than 5,000 new spaces along> the I-95 corridor.>

The commuter lot took one year to build and cost $2.2 million,> including $735,000 for right of way and $1.5 million for> construction. Shirley Contracting Inc. of Lorton constructed the> lot.>

The lighted lot has bus shelters and a kiss-and-ride area.
