Gulf Coast Roadtrip Notes 05/05/05: LA-MS-AL-FL

Justin Priola 6 May 2005 06:04:49
Destination was Orange Beach, AL. Route from New Orleans: I-10 E to AL
59 S to Foley Beach Express S to AL 180 E to AL 161 S. Return thru
Pensacola: AL 182 E to FL 292 E to BUS US 98 E to I-110 N to I-10 W.

MS has widened I-10 to three lanes from the Long Beach exit to the
Ocean Springs exit, about 25 miles, and also a short distance from the
MS 43 exit to the Diamondhead exit in Hancock Co., including the Wolf
River bridge.

Picked up a new copy of the AL official state map; very much improved
over my last edition (1994).

A new exit has been constructed in the Dawes area in Mobile Co., EXIT
10 for a county road.

For a relatively small city, the I-10 freeway in Mobile is very wide
and fast, with a minimum of 4 lanes from I-65 to downtown. The
structural steel skeleton for the RSA Building is about half complete,
from what I can tell.

The shopping center at the Malbis interchange (AL 181) is up and
running.

The Foley Beach Express (FBX) is definitely expressway grade. There is
absolutely no development along the corridor, a few paltry at-grade
crossings with US 98 and a few county roads, and controlled
intersections with any other miniscule side roads in the area
(including a few dirt roads). I never knew South Alabama could be so
devoid of population.

Orange Beach and the coastal areas still show the scars of Hurricane
Ivan, several months after it made landfall. Many camps and small
businesses remain in ruin and disrepair, and empty waterfront lots sit
where homes used to be. This still hasn't quelled the building boom,
as more new condos are under construction and cleared land for new
development is quite evident.

The various bridges over the waterways in the area are of very high
quality, and look to be of recent construction.

Somebody tell FLDOT how to build a road through a resort area like
Alabama does. That road (292) must be a pain in the summer.

I entered Pensacola from the SW; is this the bad part of town? It
looked rather run down. Pensacola's downtown was unexpectedly cute,
broken only by parking lots and newer office towers.

Clinched I-110. The whole of the 110 is being rebuilt, I assume this
is a widening to 6 overall lanes. Signage was scant and driving
through the construction zone was rather tricky. I was rather
underwhelmed by it all.

The section of I-10 from US 90 ALT to the middle of Baldwin Co. is one
of the most boring, empty, lifeless highways I have ever driven.

No way. Are you kidding? Baldwin Co. is booming. However, most of the
development is on AL 59 which is being built up pretty much from I-10 to the
coast. Every year I see a LOT of things that were not there before. The
FBE is a boring road. AL 182 is a nice drive from AL 59 to Florida.

It's a pain year round. I agree SR 292 needs to be widened NOW before it is
too late.

Not quite to Ocean Springs yet. Officially the Harrison/Jackson County
line, but they drop the eastbound 3rd lane at I-110.

It was replacement of the Wolf River bridge that drove this one. The
old bridge needed replacement, and MDOT saw the eventual need for 6
lanes on I-10, so they combined the two and ran it to the first
interchange on either side (MS 43 and Diamondhead).

CR 39, McDonald Rd...

Contrary to Presnwap's comment, much of southern Alabama, even
including about half of Baldwin County, is very rural.

As for the FBX, the developer planned it in such a way as to provide
for additional development (including, if I'm not mistaken, direct
private access from FBX, negating its expressway properties). I'm
surprised that at least some development hasn't begun yet...

Except for the Foley Beach Express, none of them are newer than 6 years
old.

Roughly 18 miles without an exit in eastern Baldwin County and across
into Florida. The curves in the road made it slightly less annoying
than it otherwise was...
