Eastern KY/Central Appalachian meet call for RSVPs

H . B . Elkins 4 May 2005 23:40:34
I've advertised the upcoming meet enough to be accused of spamming but I wanted
to put a notice out of the RSVP date.

First, I'd ask that you forward this to any other persons or forums where you
think we might pick up prospective attendees. The more the merrier!

I've gotten seven confirmations and a couple of regrets so far.

I'd like to get an accurate headcount by Monday, May 16 so I can make
reservations at the restaurant and try to line up some goodies for those of you
who come.

Please send your RSVPs to kyroadgeekreply@yahoo.com. I'll be sending out a map
of the US 119 corridor we'll be visiting, detailed driving directions, etc.,
once I get all the RSVPs.

I may be e-mailing some of you individually who live nearby, trying to talk you
into showing up.

Hope to see a big crowd! Eight (including me) is a nice number but would love to
have more!!!

H.B.

Put me down as a definite maybe. :-)
Seriously, what would be the quickest route from Knoxville to Pikeville
(Knoxville would be my breakpoint driving from Baton Rouge to
Pikeville/Columbus Oh)

Yeah, but seriously, who in their right mind would want to go to
Columbus? It's IN *Ohio*, for crissakes!

Oh,... sorry Sandor... Didn't see that was you...

Later,
Chris, who is round in the middle and high... well, I'm not
high, 'cause drugs can kill ya! I'm just high on life...
and caffeine. Plenty of caffeine...

Two possibilities: I-75 north from Knoxburg to London, and then KY 80 east to
US 23 at Water Gap, then south on 23 to Pikeville;
or east on I-40 to I-81, then I-81 to US 23/I-181 south of Kingsport, then US
23 north through Virginia and up to Pikeville. (You'll notice along the
expressway part of 23 from Big Stone Gap up to south of Wise, in Virginia,
that Big Stone Gap *and* Norton both have Exits 1 and 2 marked in their
respective city limits, and if it's a clear day, you'll get a good look at the
Powell Valley in between the two.)

Well, its safer to photograph Detroit from Ohio than from within Michigan.

Three options -- you might want to run them on Mapquest to see which one works
best.

1.) I-40 east to I-81 north to US 23 north.
Pros: four-lane all the way
Cons: might not be shortest route

2.) I-75 north to TN 63 east to US 25E north to US 119 north.
Pros: Probably the most direct route, involves Cumberland Gap tunnel and
revisions to Pine Mountain crossing.
Cons: Not all four-lane, slow two-lane from Harlan/Letcher County line on US 119
to Whitesburg, includes Pine Mountain crossing with its 15 mph curves and
switchbacks.

3.) I-75 north to Hal Rogers Parkway east to KY 80 east to US 23 south.
Pros: Better route than Option #2.
Cons: Not all four-lanes, although the Hal Rogers Parkway is a Super-2; a bit
out of the way.

Don't forget the construction along that route. Could be interesting,
could be agravating, depending on traffic.

I don't know what the situation is regarding the bridge projects in Tennessee,
but for northbound I-75 on Jellico Mountain, there are two lanes open.

Kentucky maintains an I-75 update page at
http://transportation.ky.gov/i-75updates.asp that contains links to Tennessee's
info. Check this out before you head out.
