Pavement test facilities like MnDOT's

Jake Brzeskiewicz 3 May 2005 22:12:56
I travelled past that MnDOT pavement research facility on I-94 west of
Minneapolis recently and it got me wondering if any other states have
similar facilities where they use actual highway traffic to test out
new types of pavement on a separate set of lanes. I've seen 'test
segments' on plenty of other highways, but are there any other
facilities with parallel roadways like the one in Minnesota?

Speaking of MN, can't wait 'til that 'unweave the weave' project on 694
gets done. I almost side-swiped a Toyota with the trailer I was towing
as we attempted to merge into the same lane; me following 694, him
following 35E. Then all they have to do is fix those other lane
drops...

Most states do this on existing roads. NCDOT used a portion of US 421
just north of Siler City years ago to test varying types of pavement
and subsurfaces. The road was being paved at the time and they took
advantage of it, including 10 different combinations of pavement and
subsurface in the project at specific locations. Some were expected
to fail quickly while others were tested for wear and longevity.

Eventually all of them were ripped up and the area repaved once the
studies were concluded.

For those of you unfamiliar with the setup, the Mn/Road research
facility is in the westbound lanes of I-94 at Monticello. This has
probably baffled a great variety of motorists, since you have
streetlights and lane control arrows way out in the middle of the
country; then the road divides in two with one of the paths blocked off.
The outside roadway is where all the test section are; the inside
roadway is used to shunt traffic away from the test strip when they're
working on it.

The eventual goal is to add a lane to this segment, hopefully in our
lifetimes. It will be interesting to see how they handle the expansion
through the research facility, if that is still around.
