New format for exit lists at NYC Roads

Nycroads 3 May 2005 05:19:50
I am testing a new, slightly different format for my exit lists on
nycroads.com. The new lists feature colors that are less harsh on the
eyes and are easier to print out. In addition, I am separating the
lists by roadway direction: for example, the Long Island Expressway
(I-495) will have separate pages for eastbound and westbound
directions.

Samples are included as follows:

http://www.nycroads.com/exits/I-495_NY_WB/

As always, feedback is welcome.

Bet those gifs took a while to create...

I like the concept, but the route shields within the graphics,
especially the CR shields, are a bit subpar IMO. Too fuzzy, or just
all-around look poor.

Thanks for the feedback.

I tried to reduce the size of the graphics in an effort to reduce the
length of the overall list. Guess it's not worth it if I really want to
make the list appealing to the eye.

It's possible to still have decent looking shields in a smaller size,
albeit time consuming if you don't have a set process nailed down.
What I've done for my own site is create the shield in a standard size
(60 pixels high, and whatever the width is depending on shield type),
keep it at 16 million colors during creation, and THEN reduce it down
(keeping it at 16 million colors during such) and finally convert to
.GIF. It keeps the shield quality higher, while reducing the size.
You can see some examples on my exit lists.
