Last Sunday on KRON, I caught a special on the San Francisco (SF)-Oakland Bay Bridge. In a nutshell, the program discusses the politicking which has prevented its completion thus far, including an interview w/ former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown. Brown describes how he was looking in the best interest of his constituents, by preventing any further land-acquisition from Yerba Buena Island for the eastern span. Other spotlights are put on Oakland mayors Jerry Brown and Elihu Harris, as well as a middle-eastern faculty member from UC Berkeley, who supported an interesting Self-anchoring structure (SAS) w/ cables that suspend in a diagonal (southernly) direction from the tower. This proposal was eventually rejected.
In the meantime, what seems really sad that motorists lives are being dangled w/ an outdated bridge, due to the politics between the two cities, Caltrans and the special-group in charge of the affairs.
But what seemed really interesting on the program was the array of blueprint designs proposed. It seems the "state-supported" bridge, a skyway, was dismissed as having little to no aesthetic appeal. Some called it a "freeway on stilts". For me, it doesn't look half bad--and if it cost-effective and is seismically-retrofitted for an 8.0 quake, what's the problem?
So what do you think about the skyway structure, in terms of aesthetics? Do you think a tower design is worth the costs entailed?

They want some kind of work of art you can put on a postcard. Completely ignoring the original span, like any cantelever bridge I've ever seen, is an eyesore.
I can see their point, because the prices aren't that much different, but I don't think a single tower cable-stay is very attractive either. Unless you like harps.
