OT: Popeye's (was KFC is Kentucky Fried Chicken again)

Us 71 24 April 2005 21:30:24
We has 2 Popeye's in NW Arkansas about 20 years ago that failed miserably.
One is now a Subway and the other is "Slim Chickens", but also has been a
Chinese restaurant and several other businesses.

The current Popeye's came to the area about 2 years ago then opened a second
location about 6 months ago in an old DQ. They appear to be targeting areas
with a high Hispanic population. The franchisee talks about 10 area stores
in the next 5-6 years.

They have also moved into the Springfield, MO area now as well as of about 5
years ago. Now there are 2 or 3 there.

The first one I ever ate at was near Jackson, MS on US 49 just off I-20 on
my way to Gulf War. I had to go 1/2 mile south to find an intersection to
turn around at to get to it, then another 1/2 mile north to get back to
south 49. Since then, the "novelty" has worn off... especially since the
local Popeye's have such crappy service. :(

BTW, a little trivia on Popeye's for those who might not know:

Founded by Al Copeland in late 1970's (Copeland is a pretty prominent
New Orleans resteranteur and businessman, he is well known for his
annual Christmas light displays and other local chain restaurants,
including Copeland's and Wrap and Roll)
First location (Location #1) was on Judge Perez Drive/LA 39 in Arabi,
Louisiana (since abandoned by the chain, the building is still there)
There is a "Super Popeye's" in Metairie on Veterans near Cleary which
has a red-white-and blue color motif, I have no idea if it is related
to the rest of the chain.
No longer locally owned (gee, what a surprise), it is now based in
Atlanta under the corporate name America's Best Chicken (AFC
Enterprises) which sounds suspiciously similar to the initials of Al
Copeland.

Do the Popeye's out in your neck of the woods have an old New
Orleans-style motif - false external balconies, tan colored exteriors,
murals and wrought iron on the inside? A lot of local Popeye's outlets
have been converted to that look over the past few years, which would
be the third makeover in the chain's history. I think it looks
seriously cheezy.

That wasn't the case for the two locations in Houma (as of a year ago).
I didn't check out any of the other branches in Louisiana.

The "new" local ones have that look, yes.

The closest Popeyes to me is built into a Shell gas station (intersection
Lee Dr and Highland Rd, SE of LSU)
