Suffolk takes over road maintenance from VDOT

The City CouncilÂ’s decision Wednesday to take over road maintenance
from the Virginia Department of Transportation means there will be
less money for other road projects across the state.

SuffolkÂ’s share of state road maintenance money will jump from $7.2
million to $15.1 million next year because VDOT will classify the
city’s roads as urban – which means they are funded at a higher rate –
instead of rural.

“When Suffolk takes over, that diminishes the overall amount available
for other cities,” said Charles Miller, a VDOT assistant division
administrator for management services in Richmond.

The takeover ends SuffolkÂ’s reign as the only city in the state that
still relied on VDOT to maintain its roads. The city will now have to
create a road department, but will still get the majority of its
maintenance money from the state – city crews will just do the work.

Because VDOT doesnÂ’t plan to dip into the stateÂ’s road maintenance
funds, the additional money for Suffolk will come out of the state
road construction fund, said VDOT spokeswoman Tiffany Elliott.

The greatest impact – because of Suffolk’s reclassification – will be
felt in VDOTÂ’s Hampton Roads district, which stands to lose about 4
percent of its road construction money, according to a September VDOT
report. The rest of the stateÂ’s eight districts will lose about 1.5
percent of their construction money, the report states.
