bridge pipe-dreams at the Tierra del Fuego

Stephane Dumas 24 April 2005 01:14:33
With the ideas suggested for a Gilbraltar strait crossing or the Bering
Strait crossing, I wondered if there some suggested some pipe-dreams
crossing to link the Tierra Del Fuego to the mainland of Chile and
Argentina?

It has a population of about 110,000 people, so there might be some
warrant to connecting it to the continental highway system. If I read
the following map correctly, the interconnected continental highway
system already goes to Punta Arenas, which is right across the strait
from Tierra del Fuego, and it looks like there are two places where the
strait is only 2 or 3 miles wide, and there is a highway system on
Tierra del Fuego, and there are ferries at Punta Arenas and Puerto
Progreso that connect the two highway systems.

This map has a zoom feature -- http://tinyurl.com/aebr2

Looks like the project at least deserves a feasibility study.

Why? Tierra del Fuego has almost no people or resources.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tierra_del_fuego Tierra Del Fuego
have oil and natural gas and there also ecotourism

The main towns are
-Ushuaia: pop 50 000
-Punta Arenas in the Chilean part: pop 120 000

| Why? Tierra del Fuego has almost no people or resources.

It's probably the next Sunne Wright McPeak proposal for the Bay
Bridge.

I have always been told that the political situation between the two
countries is such that they will not cooperate on anything.

According to an old Motor Trend article I read about driving there, you
cannot even take a car from one country to the other w/o all kinds of
permits and taxes and hassle. And they don't agree where the border
is.
