CA-6?

Larry Scholnick 23 April 2005 11:25:54
While traveling north on US-6 just north of Bishop, I saw a (CA-) 6 in the traditional green
California shield. It was especially noticeable because it was the larger, 3-digit sized shield
with a lonely single digit in the middle, feeling as lonely as anyone driving on this empty road
between Bishop, CA and Tonopah, NV. It was especially incongruous given that we had just passed a
sign indicating the distance to the eastern end of US-6 in Maine.

Were they out-of-stock on US shields? I guess in a state that only has 7 US highways, they don't
keep that many US shields in stock.

And they claim US50 is the loneliest highway! I drove from Bishop to Ely,
NV one Sunday evening and saw two cars and a truck in over 200 miles. US50
is busy, by comparison.

There's a sign on 6 just outside Bishop, saying "Provincetown, MA 3205
miles". Is that the one? Got a photo here. Can't say I've noticed a CA6
sign, though.

US6 from Bishop to Delta, UT is probably my favorite drive. I always stop
at Blackrock Station, between Tonopah and Ely, to pass the time of day
with the interesting old guy that runs it. Only gas for a hundred miles in
either direction.

US 6 goes to Maine? Not exactly, but close, since Maine was once part of
Massachusetts, where US 6 has its eastern end in Provincetown.

Usually that is the doing of the local district of CalTrans (in this case).
Someone get a photo before they notice...

Either way, they'd have to have created a shield just for that
road. It sounds like a Caltrans or contractor's mistake to me.

Did you get a photo?

Sorry, no picture. The sign is within the 1st 10 miles north of Bishop; perhaps a roadgeek/skier
can take a slight detour on the way to Mammoth.
