NE Illinois/NW Indiana notes

Michael G. Koerner 22 April 2005 19:20:22
Had the day off on Thursday (2005-04-21) and went poking around in the
Chicagoland area.

A few notes:

-Is (most of) Sheridan Rd north of the City of Chicago a 'secret' IDOT
state highway? If so, what is its 'secret' number (if it has one)? It
winds all over but is built to different standards than the rest of the
streets/roads around it. It also has a lot of what looks like IDOT signage.

-Are those residents along the really hilly and windy part of Sheridan
Rd in Winettka SOL if they want to walk/ride a bicycle to/from their
houses (BMW/Porsche/Lexus access only)?

-The area between Hyde Park and downtown Chicago (Kenwood, et al)
appears to be in the midst of an incredible building boom. This is an
area that was an urban 'no mans' wasteland as recently as 10 years ago.

-What was the major driving route between South Shore Dr (south of 67th
St) and the downtown area before the Burnham Park landfill and Lake
Shore Drive were built?

-There continues to be MAJOR work on the Borman/Kingery expressway
(I-80/94). The part between Cline Ave (IN 912) and I-65 appears to be
doubling its width, with new crossroad overcrossings that are now twice
as long as they were before. The entire six lanes of the highway fit
comfortably under one side of each of them at each lane shift.

-I shudder at the thought of what InDOT will have to do the next time US
30 becomes overwhelmed with traffic at I-65.

-The I-80/94/294/IL 394 interchange is being completely rebuilt, with
the work continuing eastward on the Kingery (I-80/94) to the Indiana
state line. Much wider ROW there, too, and includes a new SPUI at
Torrence Av (US 6/IL 83).

-The Dan Ryan/Skyway interchange (I-90/94) is being heavly upgraded,
with much retaining wall work being done and a new SEB Skyway
overcrossing in place.

When I grew up in the area it was IL-42. They took the signs down back in
the 1970s somtime.

We called that area of Sheridan "the ravines". Sheridan gets a lot of
cyclist traffic, and I used to ride that section of Sheridan all the time,
at least going northbound. Southbound I tended to detour around it on Old
Green Bay Road to Tower Road. Of course, it helped to have momentum going
through there, would be more difficult pulling out of your driveway on a
bicycle.

Sheridan Road is former IL Route 42. Most of it has been deeded over to
the local towns for maintenance, except that part north of Great Lakes,
which is now IL-137. The part south of there lost it's state number
about 1971.

No bicycles are allowed between Tower Road and Scott Avenue due to the
several accidents with them in that stretch (called "The Ravines").
There is a path pretty much smack in the middle from a side street that
allows access to a beach and many of the homes.

This part of Chicago is in heavy rehab and yuppification.

I would guess Martin Luther King Drive (I forget what it was called
before the re-name) was the main N-S drag near the lake before south
LSD was built. I once worked at 26th and King Dr. and it still carried
a lot of local traffic.
