Kids' book where dog eats map collection?

 I'd be shocked if anyone knows the answer to this question, but I think
I'll give it a try.

The reason I'm asking it here is because a map collection being
destroyed is the type of thing that would be remembered forever by
people in a roads newsgroup.

The book probably came out in the late '70s or very, very early '80s. It
was intended for kids who were maybe 6 or 7 years old. I think the book
was printed on slicker paper than most books, and it was full of
colorful, funny illustrations. Anyway, the book was a simple, humorous
story about a dog (or maybe it was some other pet) who eats everything
in sight. The dog belonged to a bespectacled boy who was maybe 12 years
old and his father (who had a bushy mustache, I think).

Anyway, the dog eats the youngster's map collection. I think he also
eats all the dough when the boy's dad is making cookies.

Does anybody remember the title or author of this tome? I think this
book needs to be revived for today's youth.
