Farm Truck (FT) special tags

Elliott Plack 22 April 2005 05:22:20
What are FT (farm truck) tags? I see them out in the countryside in
Maryland. It has numbers and letters at random followed by the letters
"FT" stacked, and it says farm at the bottom... Do these vehicles have
different inspection standards or something?

Mostly it is different tax rates. They don't pay the large
commercial truck fees, but they are only allowed on the farm
and to go to and from places to pick up farm supplies or
deliver farm products.

Its a tax deal. In many, I would think most states, a farmer can paint
"Farm Use Only" on a truck and it does not get taxed as a vehicle, but
just as a part of the farm equipment, which often means not at all.
It can also be operated on untaxed gasoline (legally, anybody with
access to untaxed gasoline is going to use in anyway) and the vehicle
does not need a plate. It can be used on certain highways, relative to
the farm's legitimate work, with no plate at all.

Some states see a problem with unidentifiable and unregistered vehicles
out on the highway, so they issue plates to such vehicles, often for
only a nominal charge.

Which states does this apply to? I've never seen a truck on the highway with
this painted on it and no license plate, and I've seen a lot ot "farm truck"
plates.

You're correct about the tax difference, as well as the usual usage
restrictions.
