Chesapeake Bay Bridge Will be Set for Holiday

Scott M. Kozel 21 April 2005 06:22:23
"Bridge will be set for holiday"
_Baltimore Sun_ - April 20, 2005
Excerpts:

'All five lanes of the Bay Bridge are expected be open by Memorial Day
weekend, state transportation officials said yesterday in an update on a
resurfacing project that has drawn widespread criticism for inefficiency
and ineffectiveness.'

'Transportation Secretary Robert L. Flanagan said the state has brought
in a second work crew to make sure the westbound span is ready for the
traditional start of the summer travel season. He said crews have
finished pouring concrete on about half of the 7,640 feet of road
scheduled to be resurfaced in the $71 million project.'

'"We feel very good about being done by Memorial Day," Flanagan said,
though he added that a specific finish date has not been set.'

'The secretary said that after the current phase of the resurfacing is
complete, work crews will not return to the bridge regularly until late
2006. Even then, he said, round-the-clock lane closures won't be
necessary. One lane of the bridge's westbound span has been closed
almost nonstop this year, causing regular backups at rush hour.'

More likely before the holiday.

As of about a month ago all of the total deck replacement was
complete in the tangent on the west end of the bridge and the
two spans in the section east of the truss span.

As of this past weekend all of the surface replacement east of the
truss span was complete.

The last couple of days was spent moving the paving train
equipment to the two segments west of the suspension span.

Looks like they are going to have two paving train working at
the same time.

It will be nice to have no construction on the bridge until late 2006.

It sounds like the remaining work beginning in late 2006 will be
accomplished during overnight closures of part of the bridge, where
existing panels of the bridge will be removed and new pre-fabricated
panels will be installed, with all lanes open during the day and on
weekends, similar to the I-95 James River Bridge Restoration between
1999 and 2002.

My best guess is all of the resurfacing to the middle lane will
be done by the end of next week. Both Thursday and Friday nights
two paving trains were working west of the curve. I would not be
surprised when I travel over the bridge Monday night all of the
work west of the curve will be done and one of the paving trains
will be ready to do the section between west anchorage of the
suspension bridge and the curve.

They will likely close the right lane next fall during the week
to redo the bad sections and have it ready to open on weekends.
This is how they did the middle lane between the truss span and
the east anchorage of the suspension bridge two years ago. They
milled off about about 600 to 800 feet of the lane Sunday and
Monday night, clean and dress the surface Tuesday, pour concrete
on Wednesday and opened it to traffic Friday afternoon.

I will assume those pre-fabricated panels will be on the
suspension span and or in the truss spans.

Probably so, and the 1 1/2 years without work will be used to reevaluate
the remaining work needed on the westbound bridge, and to derive the
exact design of that remaining work to rehab/restore the roadway deck.
