Various Wisconsin Notes

Jon Enslin 21 April 2005 03:34:20
-I have *finally* clinched all US Highways in Wisconsin. The only
section I had left was US-2 between US-53 and the MN border...including
the Bong Bridge.

Coincidently, this stretch is probably the ugliest stretch of US
Highway in Wisconsin. Man, and I thought Superior was ugly from
US-53...

-I also took a trip I have always wanted to take. WI-13 around the
penninsula from Ashland to Superior. After Bayfield, I hardly saw any
traffic whatsoever! Ashland to Mellon is now the only strech of WI-13
I have not travelled.

-I am not sure how long this has been the case, but WI-52 has been
re-routed in Antigo. It used to come into town from the south with
US-45/WI-47. When this n/s highway intersected with WI-64, WI-52 took
a soft right, headed northeast, to intersect again with WI-64 as it
headed out of town.

Now WI-52 heads north at the first intersection to create a four-way
multiplex. (US-45, WI-47,52,64). WI-52 and 64 then head easterly
together out of town. How long has this been the case? The state map
I have from last year still show the older route.

Hard to believe it used to be the second largest city in Wisconsin.

Latest county maps from WisDOT show it with WI 52 relocated. I missed
that one while going over the '05 county maps. Another quadruple
multiplex for Wisconsin.

53 through Superior is kind of ugly, but after miles and miles of nothing
I've always thought that it is kind of cool to see the lake and all of the
indusrty around it.>

I may be on that this summer. Anything special I should look out for or
stop at?

If you got time for a short hike, Copper Falls State Park is pretty
sweet (just outside Mellen on WI 169). It's one of the biggest
waterfalls in the state. Two actually; Copper Falls and Brownstone
Falls.

Copper Falls is definately worth the stop. If you head up to
Superior again, its also worth the side trip to see Big Manitou falls
in Pattison St. Park. Its about 15-20 miles south of Superior on WI
35.

Superior and also Duluth does look a lot better than it did 20-30
years ago. At that time the Whaleback ship and the old ore doc
bridges were the only thing on the lake side of 2-53. They have begun
to develop that place over the last 15 years. They still have a long
way to go to get to where Duluth is with Park Point. But 25 years ago
Park point also looked like it was a ghost town. All it had was the
bridge, the coast guard building, the original Grandmas and a lot of
empty buildings.
