Are there any future plans for the nation's shortest 2di?

What about renaming Delaware's new DE Rt. 1 to 97 and continuing it
down the coast across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to merge or
perhaps end at 64. This way it would join with 95 to the north and 64
to the south. Then they could rename the existing portion to 197 or 997
and have it multiplex 50 to Ocean City, MD. All these routes are very
heavily traveled especially in the summer, so why don't they get the
interstate status the demand and deserve.

...because, believe it or not, traffic volumes are not that high along
Virginia's Eastern Shore. That and there'd be some serious
right-of-way and constructability issues within Virginia Beach alone,
let alone the rest of the Virginia segment.

It's not really needed at all (DE 1) as a freeway other than what has
already been built. Would also cost alot of money because basically none
of US 113 can be used for this new highway, and nothing more than the 5-6
miles north of the CBBT on US 13 can be used either. I thought it was an
interesting pipe dream until I started driving on Delmarva, then you see
that there's just no way it can work, and if the money and the willpower in
government was there to build it, there's no way I could see the people
living there accepting it and giving up their land for new right of way.

US 50 would need a boatload of work too, to become an interstate on the
Eastern Shore. Not to mention, it doesn't solve the traffic problems going
to the shore from the DC/Baltimore area.

Because they are ONLY heavily traveled in the summer. Don't get me wrong,
they aren't deserted roads the rest of the year, but the only time of year
that would warrant the upgrades in most places is in the summer. Besides
which, the last thing that the Maryland State Police need is yet another
great road to sit and pull over people for doing one over the speed limit
(which would probably have to be 55 to appease locals to have any chance of
being built). They already have I-68, the western portion of I-70 in the
state, I-95 northeast of Baltimore, US 15/340 west of Frederick, MD, and the
Eastern Shore stretch of US 301.

Um, there's this bridge over the Chesapeake Bay that is NOT Interstate
standard. So it is *very* difficult if not impossible to take that
Interstate to Maryland's Eastern Shore. There are certain requirements
a highway and/or bridge must meet for Interstate Highway standards.

Neither is the Tappan Zee bridge, which is a smaller, but similiar, concept
of bridge. (Bridge with long causeway) Hell, for that point, neither is
anything given an Interstate designation with the possible exception of the
new Bruckner interchange, in NYC.

There are plenty of problems with making the two major corridors in Delmarva
Interstates, but I don't think looking the other way on the northern Bay
Bridge is one of them.

And just curious, where does I-595 end? I thought it did end on the other
side of the bridge at the US50/301 split? If that's the case, there is no
arguement here.

So why did the name I-97 that in the first place?

The I-595 projects eastern end is at MD-70 at Annapolis, actually about
100 yards from the US-50/US-301 Severn River bridge, as the federal
Interstate funding paid for the upgrade of the original highway almost
up to the Severn River bridge.

The original plan to sign I-595 would have followed US-50 between
the I-95/I-495 Capital Beltway to MD-70 Roscoe C. Rowe Blvd.

About 20 years ago I received a letter from MDOT SHA in response to some
questions of mine, and I suggested to them possibly extending the I-595
designation to the US-50/US-301 wye at Queenstown, after the US-50
rebuild to I-595 was complete, and after the freeway upgrade of
US-50/US-301 between Annapolis and Queenstown, was complete; and they
told me that they were considering doing just that. I don't think that
there ever was any official decision by MDOT SHA to extend I-595 east of
MD-70, though.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge has five 12-foot-wide lanes, but minimal
shoulders not more than 2 feet wide.

Likely because the state wanted it as a 2DI, as it connects Maryland's
largest metropolitan area to the state capital city (just outside of the
city limits), MDOT SHA applied for it, and FHWA and AASHTO decided to
give it to them.

They gave it to them knowing that there are no more possibilities for
N-S interstates East of 95 though. I just thought that seemed like a
bold move.

The I-97 decision was made before I-99 was designated, so I-99 was still
available, but your point is taken that there are only two north-south
numbers higher than 95.

I would surmise that nobody else was proposing an I-97 at that time, so
FHWA and AASHTO didn't mind giving it to Maryland after Maryland asked
for it.

The Maryland State Police doesn't pull over people for doing one
over the speed limit. I had one tail me from Mardala Springs to
Hebron on Christmas Eve. I was doing 60 MPH in the right lane. I
have blown past many of their speed enforcement traps a 60 MPH
in the right lane many times with the tropper was shooting radar
at me.

Oh and by the way The Salisbury Bypass is posted 65 MPH, So that
pretty much blows holes in your theory that an upgraded and or new
controlled access highway on the Marylands Eastern Shore would be
posted 55 MPH

The IRT Lexington Avenue Line subway in New York City is very heavily
traveled. Let's call it I-85.
