Trip Report: CA 1

Scott en Aztln 19 April 2005 09:36:55
We went up to Santa Cruz on Saturday. We took the 405 north, then went
west on the 10 to PCH. We passed such notable landmarks as Palisades
Park, where Route 66 ends, as well as La Conchita, site of last
winter's most publicized landslide. We hopped onto the 101 in Oxnard,
spending the rest of the trip north on El Camino Real.

On the return trip we headed south on CA 1 from Santa Cruz, following
through Monterey and Big Sur. Unfortunately, we didn't have time for
Justice's "Poor Man's 17-Mile-Drive," but we still had a great time -
not only is the scenery spectacular, but the road is a blast to drive.
The only road I've ever driven that is even remotely similar is the
Road to Hana on Maui: a two-lane road clinging to the sides of cliffs,
the ocean on one side and a sheer vertical rock face on the other. If
ever there was a road made for sports cars, this is it! There were
very few "wrinklies in Winnebagos" and the ones we did encounter were
polite enough to use the turnouts. As a matter of fact, most of the
people were willing to pull off and let faster traffic past, which was
a refreshing change from the way people drive along the Ortega
Highway. Still it was pretty slow going: no sooner did I get past one
Fraidy Cat driving 35 MPH than I caught up to another one (or pack of
them). There were a few stretches of open road, however, and I took
full advantage. ;)

We made another pleasant detour through the foothills above Santa
Barbara. The 101 betwen SB and Carpinteria was choked with nightmare
traffic, so we ducked off onto CA 192. This turned out to be extremely
worthwhile, as it is another twisty mountain road running through lots
of expensive hillside estates. Much better than stop-and-go traffic.
:)

All in all, it was an extremely long, but fun, drive. If you plan to
try it, I'd recommend doing so on a weekday when presumably there will
be less traffic...
