I-95/I-495 Beltway Oxon Hill Detour April 16th & 17th

WWB Project News Release> April 12, 2005>
ATTENTION: LONG DISTANCE & OVERNIGHT TRAVELERS> * Major Traffic Change in Maryland This Weekend – Expect Delays *> Overnight Closures of I-95/I-495 Beltway Outer and Inner Loops April> 16th & 17th Immediately East of Woodrow Wilson Bridge>
Motorists Will Be Directed Around Closures Via Signed Detours>
Oxon Hill, Md. - Wilson Bridge Project construction will require all> lanes on northbound I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop), between> I-295 and Maryland 210, to be closed during overnight hours this> weekend (April 16th and 17th). Three of the four lanes on southbound> I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop), between Maryland 414 and> approximately Maryland 210, also will be closed, during the same time> period. The closures will be in effect from 10:00 PM, Saturday night> (April 16th) until 8:00 AM, Sunday morning (April 17th) and again> from 10:00 PM, Sunday night (April 17th) until 5:00 AM, Monday> morning (April 18th). The temporary lane closures are necessary to> safely hoist five 124-foot long steel beams across the Beltway; the> beams will support a new bridge that will span the future wider> Beltway.>
Motorists traveling on I-95/I-495 N (Beltway Outer Loop) will use the> following marked detour:> • Take exit 2A ramp to Maryland 210 South> • Take next immediate exit ramp to Oxon Hill Road (Maryland 414) > East / Maryland 210 North> • Turn right at light onto Oxon Hill Road (Maryland 414) heading> eastbound> • Go through the Oxon Hill Road/Maryland 210 Intersection and access> the Beltway Outer Loop by using the signalized left-turn ramp.>
Drivers accessing the Beltway Outer Loop via southbound I-295 also> will be affected by this weekendÂ’s overnight closure and will be> directed to use the same detour as above, beginning with the exit> ramp to Oxon Hill Road (Maryland 414) East / Maryland 210 North.>
Motorists traveling on I-95/I-495 S (Beltway Inner Loop) will> continue to get by on the far right lane. The entrance ramp from> southbound Maryland 210 to the Beltway Inner Loop will be closed,> however, requiring local drivers to use the following marked detour:> • Continue traveling southbound on Maryland 210 to next immediate> Beltway Outer Loop exit ramp> • Take the Beltway Outer Loop to exit ramp 4B (MD 414 East)> • Reenter the Beltway Inner Loop from MD 414 East>

The overnight construction hours and temporary lane closures and> detours, scheduled during the lightest travel periods, are intended> to limit public inconvenience and are anticipated to primarily affect> overnight drivers/truckers. To avoid the major delays that are> expected, long-distance travelers are urged to consider using the> west/north arc of the Capital Beltway (I-495) across the American> Legion Bridge, which is approximately the same distance for I-95> travel, or MD Route 301, as alternate routes.>
Extensive highway message signage will be posted directing motorists> through the closures and detour routes. For long-distance travelers,> signs will be posted on I-95 well before reaching the Capital> Beltway, thereby enabling them to choose alternative routes that> avoid the detours. Stepped-up Maryland State Police and Safety> Service Patrols also will be in place throughout the work hours to> direct and assist traffic.>
Drivers should expect additional overnight lane closures on the> Beltway Inner Loop, as well as the entrance ramp from southbound> Maryland 210 to the Beltway Inner Loop, in the coming weeks as work> continues to progress in this vicinity. Drivers are urged to slow> down and use increased caution when approaching and traveling through> the affected area. All construction-related road, ramp and lane> closures are subject to change, based on weather and contractor> scheduling. Click on www.wilsonbridge.com for the latest information> at all times.
