"More of Pa. Turnpike to get 65 m.p.h. speed limit"
_Philadelphia Inquirer_ - Tue, Apr. 12, 2005

'Speed limits are rising to 65 m.p.h. on 100 miles of the Pennsylvania
Turnpike, including through the Philadelphia region, where the limit has
stood at 55 since the 1970s.'

'With the changes, all but a few short stretches of the 531-mile toll
road will be a 65-m.p.h. zone.'

'In the Philadelphia area, the higher limit will go into effect by
Memorial Day between the Valley Forge interchange and the Delaware River
Bridge, and on the Northeast Extension between the Mid-County and
Lansdale interchanges, the turnpike commission said yesterday.'

'"Our intention had always been to get as much of the turnpike returned
to 65 m.p.h. where it's safe to do so," Joe Brimmeier, commission chief
executive officer, said in a written statement.'

'He said the new limits were made possible by state vehicle code changes
allowing higher speeds in "urbanized areas" near Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh and by recent widening and straightening of portions of the
turnpike in Western Pennsylvania.'

'Some exceptions to the 65 m.p.h. limit will remain in effect: Speed
limits will stay at 55 inside the turnpike's five tunnels, on approaches
to major interchanges such as Mid-County and the Delaware River Bridge,
and on a mountainous eight-mile stretch near the Allegheny Tunnel.'

'Variable, weather-dictated limits up to 65 m.p.h. will apply in a
31-mile stretch between the Allegheny Tunnel and the Donegal Interchange
in Westmoreland County, according to the commission.'

'State police have supported a uniform speed limit, because it "provides
more consistency for enforcement," Lt. Diane Stackhouse, a state police
spokeswoman, said.'
