US 64 Bypass delayed until June

John Lansford 12 April 2005 02:09:44
 http://www.nbc17.com/news/4362359/detail.html?subid=10101621

A section of failed concrete has pushed back the projected opening of
the U.S. Highway 64 bypass around Knightdale by several weeks.

Engineers deemed about 700 feet of one lane along the 11-mile highway,
officially known as U.S. Highway 64/264, not strong enough for state
standards, so the contractor ripped it up and replaced it at no cost
to the state.

"It's nothing I would consider atypical for highway construction,"
said Steve DeWitt, construction director for the North Carolina
Department of Transportation. "We had a few pavement issues Â… but the
contractor has worked diligently to get the project on track."

The $190 million project, which has been under construction since July
2002, is now scheduled to open in late May or early June.

Steve Leonard, the DOT engineer overseeing the project, said weather
delays are the main obstacle in meeting a fast-approaching deadline to
complete the six-lane highway, which runs from near the Poole Road
interchange of the Interstate 440 Beltline to Wendell.

Drat. This highway can't come soon enough, but I'll wait another couple
of weeks for them to get the surface right :)
