That is very true. Also, that billboard is on the west side of I-94
about 2 meters inside of Illinois. There is a small green sign for the
state line for Illinois on the southbound side, but none for Wisconsin northbound.

My brother visited Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin for his first
time ever this weekend. He said that while he didn't immediately see an
actual Wisconsin State Line sign heading north on I-94, he did notice a
billboard ad nearby. On one side, it was advertising the Wisconsin
Lottery "Megabucks" game while the other side featured an Illinois
Lottery "Mega Millions" ad. Is this true? I've never been to either IL
or WI and he didn't have his camera with him. :<

I drove that last September, and I seem to recall some of Wisconsin
State line sign, or a Welcome to Wisconsin sign.

Perhaps it was knocked down by a vehicle going off the road?

Wisconsin typically does not have state line signs on major
highways. Dittos for Minnesota. Both states like to build
monuments at the major entrances. MN uses a big granite
map of the state, while Wisconsin has a wooden cut-out map
of the state. Both states do use rather generic signs on
the smaller state line crossings. You can see examples
at my State Line Signs web site.

I think the sign on the southbound [Eastbound?] side says:

Welcome to Illinois
Construction Ahead
Please Pay Toll

The big wood 'welcome' sign is just north of the new truck inspection station.

Interestingly, on WI 32, the same sign is located at the south city
limits of Kenosha, well away from the state line.

That snap was taken in 2000. The sign was at the welcome center at that
time. Yes. that's me standing behind the sign.

There is a 'welcome sign' located north of the truck inspection station
and one in the welcome center. The sign by the truck inspection
station was moved further north to behind the right-of-way fence to
discourage people from stopping along I-94. There never was a
northbound sign to mark the state line. The state line is located at
the taper of the ramp into the truck inspection station. The lottery
billboard is located close to the state line.

Yes, the billboard going NB does advertise the WI Lottery and the SB
promotes the IL lottery. Kind of a neat arrangement...

There is a State Line sign in both directions, it is possible that he
either missed it or it was knocked over when he went by.

Just north of the state line is a large wooden cut-out "Welcome to
Wisconsin" sign as well as a truck inspection station for NB traffic.
Just south of the state line US-41 splits from I-94, with US-41 pretty
much heading straight south (as a free 4 lane divided highway), while
I-94 bends a bit to the west before winding back to the south as the
Tollway.

There are representations of both on my Wisconsin Highways website at:

http://www.wisconsinhighways.org/

The large "wooden" cutout sign is part of the header graphic at the
top left, while the homepage has one of the smaller blue/green/white
"Welcome to Wisconsin" sign representations.

As for I-94, I'm suprised no one has noted that when WisDOT built the
new overpass just north of the line that they "stamped" the concrete
railing with a large "Welcome to Wisconsin," just as they did on the
first overpass inside the state on I-90 in Beloit. I'd say that does
fulfill the mission of a "welcome sign" as well.

Later,
Chris
