Minnesota happenings

Monte Castleman 7 April 2005 15:27:06
Here are a few things that have been going on in the North Star State.

1.) 1/10th mileposts at the US 169 / MN 101 interchange. There are no
marked numbers on the secret TH 101 between MN 13 and CR 101, or the
road between that secret highway and US 169 south. Presumabably this
became a problem with reporting emergency situations, so 1/10th mile
markers have gone up to identify the highways. The roadways between MN
13 and CR 101 is identified as "west/east ramp 101", the roadways
connecting with US 169 south is identified as "ramp c12/d12".

2.)Anderson Lakes Pkwy and Bloomington Ferry Road at US 169 are closed
to all traffic, elminating another one of the notorious stoplights on
that road. 2 down, 3 to go. So far no visable work on the new bridge,
just the temporary bypasses were built. The original plan was to close
down the roads as soon as the Pioneer Trail interchange opened last fall
and then build the new bridge over the winter, but for some reason the
project was delayed until spring.

The north ramps to Old Shakopee Road are also closed for a few weeks to
build an auxillary lane between them and the south ramps of Pioneer
Trail.

3.) The 2005 construction season projects have been announce. The only
big surprise is that construction of the east Belle Plaine interchange
will start this fall. I knew that Scott County wanted to advance-fund
the project, but last I heard they were reluctant to push the issue
because of a change in leadership in the city of Belle Plaine.

4.) Notable bills in the legislature include a "left lane for passing
only" law, a requirement for Mn/DOT to deactivate 100 ramp meters,
authority for local municipalities to set speed limits, and a ban on
young drivers using cell phones. Mn/DOT opposes all these except for
possibly the last one.

5.) Another upcoming SPUI announced. Ramsey county is cobbling together
funding for rebuilding the Hanson Blvd / US 10 interchange.

6.) The concrete work on the American Blvd overpass over I-35W is
complete. It has the same "vagely art deco" style of the other 1950s
overpasses in the area. American Blvd is designed as a parellel relief
route to I-494. Also, Lyndale Ave. has been rebuilt both from 76th to
77th and from American Blvd to 82nd in preperation for the upcoming
interchange reconstruction at I-494.

7.) I-494 construction between MN 5 and France was demobilized for the
winter, while construction continued from MN 5 to I-394. Last fall the
nortbound lanes were temporarily widened and southbound traffic shifted
over. This cleared the way for bridge demolition and reconstruction over
the winter. Huge amounts of rebar are being stockpiled at the MN 5
interchange to allow concrete paving to begin as soon as ground
conditions allow.

8. Signs for the HOV to HOT conversion of I-394 are going up. Some are
covered, but some are visable. Presumably to avoid confusion the roadway
will not be restriped until the weekend before the tolling opens.
Authorities have announced enforcement will be agressive. Too bad they
couldn't make it interoperative with I-Pass, considering the number of
Minnesotans who go down to Chicago to hang out for the weekend.
