Delaware River floods again--massive problems

Guest 6 April 2005 02:05:42
Last September heavy rains in the upper part of Pennsylvania
overloaded the Delaware River causing it to flood towns
along it southward.

The river again flooded this weekend, only worse this time.
Key roads and bridges on both parts of the river were
closed creating massive rush hour traffic jams (and
many workers were given the day off).

Before these two floods, there was nothing serious since
1955. (Occassionally the river would get a little high
and some streets adjacent to the river would flood in spots,
but not the enormous damage and dislocation caused now.)

The main problem with periodic flooding there has been more along the
Lehigh River. I'd seen Lehigh Drive flood over many times near the old
Ingersoll plant in West Easton, a mile or two up from the confluence
with the Delaware.

But along the Delaware, the '55 Hurricane Diane flood is the only one
I'd ever seen (tho I was then a young'un) until last summer. Now this
weekend's flood -- two in less than nine months. I will be there this
weekend and get a chance to see any damage first-hand, but PA-611 was
under significant depth right at the confluence.

Along much of the Delaware main stem between PA and NJ, the flood over
the past few days has been the worst since August 1955.

Monday, the Delaware at Trenton crested at 25.33 feet. This is a major
flood, and major flooding conditions occured at most points along the
river. It is now the 4th highest recorded crest. The following are the
top 5 crests before this flood:

(1) 30.60 ft on 03/08/1904
(2) 28.60 ft on 08/20/1955
(3) 28.50 ft on 10/11/1903
(4) 24.43 ft on 03/19/1936
(5) 23.39 ft on 09/19/2004

While in NJ on unrelated business, I was able to view the flooded
areas.

I drove along Route 29 this evening now that they've reopened the
northbound lanes (and part of the southbound lanes). From what I could
tell, flooding on the roadway itself was limited to the area in
downtown Trenton (in the viscinity of the Amtrack, Route 1 and Trenton
Makes bridges) and the section from Lee Avenue (south end of the
"Island") north to Wilburtha Road in Ewing... that's based on where I
noticed the cars were kicking up clouds of dust...

So, it's too early to read anything into what just happened here (now 4
and 6). Could just be a fluke.

I believe it is.

From my office window in Trenton, I could see front end loaders on Rt.
29 SB during the day moving mud in the Memorial Drive vicinity. I
wasn't in Monday (went to the Phillies home opener), but was told both
NB and SB lanes were covered with water, in one spot nearly as high as
the overhead BGS's on 29, so I was told.

That's right in the neighborhood of one of my old AM radio transmitter
sites. They made me build a studio addition up higher but then after I
left they built a new transmitter bldg down between the towers. I'm
wondering if the place is under water or on the air. This is the station
these days: http://www.wimg1300.com/

They're safe - quite a bit inland. Rt. 29 butts right up against the
water in areas, and some of those houses that were flooded out are
between 29 and the river up the road.
