WI-175 Bridge Photo

Chris Tarr 3 April 2005 03:23:38
Several people here have talked about the bridge and "interchange" at
WI-33 and WI-175 (Original US-41). There are people here like Mr.
Bessert that can give you better history on it than I, but it is a neat
old bridge, at what was a very early incarnation of an interchange.

If you look at the Terra-server image at http://tinyurl.com/4weaj.
You'll see WI-175 going along the left side, and the access road on the
right. Both "ramps" are two-way feeders that connect to WI-33.

Anyway, here is a pic of the bridge. I am on the NE corner of WI-33
and the access roads, facing West.

Great photo! Thanks for sharing that great example of an early grade
separation.

I'm not exactly certain when that setup was put into place, but I'm
pretty sure it was there by 1937, so at this time I'd say it dates to
the mid-1930s.

Later,
Chris

If you look closely, the access road on the right had access to WI-33
at one time. It appears it was eliminated by the time the 1992 aerial
photo was taken. I believe that was a 4 lane throughway where the
southbound went under and northbound went over. By the way that
overpass is one of the earliest grade separated interchanges in WI.
There were a couple more around that timeframe in the Milwaukee area
IIRC long before the I system existed.
Also that design looks somewhat similar to the overpasses on the PA
Turnpike also built around the same time frame(late 1930s).

The access roadway (original US 41/WI 15) is still fully intact (I drove
it a month or so ago).

It is simply a two-lane bypass roadway and was always two lanes. The
old intersection has very bad sight lines, with traffic between WI 33
and the access roadways controlled today with a four-way STOP.

That was a fast response... wow...
In other words, the 2 lane bypass was built sometime later like in the
later 30s or early 40s to correct that sight distnace or much later????
I hope they do not decommisson WI-175 more than they plan to.

Are there plans to eliminate the overpass and allow access on the newer
lane?

Pretty good guess. The bridge was constructed in 1933. It is
different than normal rural WisDOT bridges of that era. Those bridges
either had the spindled parapets or the solid concrete (widowmaker)
parapets. The spindled parapets tended to be used on longer
structures.

To give you an idea on how bad the sight line is, my picture was taken
with me standing on the west corner of the north access road facing
west. I am actually farther into the intersection than you would be at
the southbound stop line. The hill at the right pretty much blocks
your view to the west.

What do you mean? The bridge carries two-way traffic. In order to get to
STH 33, you use the access road, which is also two-way. All traffic has
access everywhere at the current time. The bridge does not carry southbound
traffic only.

What I meant a bridge replacement (newer structure) in the future.....
Sorry for the confusion.

I admit I have not been on that section of WI-175. I been on it from
FDL to Lomira only.

What I meant is the access road on the north end appears to have
changed over the years and doesnt meet up with the newer segment as it
used to. You can see the old phantom grades where it met up with it on
the north end on terraserver.

I am suprised they never thought of building an early *interchange with
ramps in that area*

Good thing you got it when you did. WisDOT just announced it will be
tearing the bridge down and replacing the STH 175 / STH 33 intersection as a
four-way stop. Construction begins April 18 2005.

They should have put in a roundabout.

Wow...how disappointing. It's always sad to see a piece of history
like that go. It is a prime candidate for reconstruction, however.
