Mississippi-Louisiana Roadtrip (SEMI-LONG)

TRobertson 1 April 2005 01:57:03
Yesterday, I had a few hours to spare, so I took a 200 mile trip from
Poplarville, Miss., to New Orleans and back. The route was U.S. 11,
U.S. 90, U.S. 61, U.S. 51, Old U.S. 51, Bus. U.S. 51, U.S. 190, Bus.
U.S. 90, La. 21 and La. 10-Miss. 26.
From what I have seen on maps, the old U.S. 11 bridge over the Pearl
River in Hancock County is gone. Is old U.S. 11 on part of what is now
Stennis Space Center, and is it possible for civilians to travel down
that far (if coming from I-59)?

Near the start of Pontchartrain Drive in Slidell is a sign remaining
from 2001 that says the U.S. 11 bridge over the Pontchartrain is
closed. I took my chances, and luckily, I was correct in assuming that
it was a left-over.

I was going to take a picture of the Fisherman's Castle in Irish Bayou,
but someone took the batteries out of my digital camera. I had seen
the home for years, but I never knew exactly what it was.

Driving along U.S. 90 in New Orleans was easier than I expected.
Traffic didn't pick up until I was on U.S. 61 in Metairie.

Old U.S. 51 south of Ponchatoula is in great shape; it is a great
alternative to the interstate. This is probably due to the amount of
fishing traffic. Near the railroad tracks is an old alignment of the
highway with wooden bridges (some of which I wouldn't crawl on). An
Amtrak train was stopped south of Akers.

Bus. U.S. 51 in Ponchatoula is a different story. It is still
concrete, and there was construction at the intersection with La. 52.

The intersection with I-12 south of Hammond was a mess at 3:30. I
think I sat through five cycles at one traffic light.

I see what my grandma meant when she thought Covington was built
strangely. Travel on Bus. U.S. 190 includes two fifteen m.p.h. curves.

La. 21 between Bogalusa (and the Miss. state line) and Bush is a great
drive now, with a speed limit of 65 m.p.h.

The Miss. welcome sign on Miss. 26 is almost two miles into the state.
Maybe they wanted trucks to be checked before being welcomed, since it
is positioned just after the weigh station.

All in all, it was a fair drive, with Bus. U.S. 51 being the only
trouble spot.

IIRC, Stennis begins further south, so yes you could theoretically make
it down to that old US 11 (and old US 90 too). Civilians are not
allowed to drive through Stennis, though.

On a related note, I'll be transferring to Stennis late this summer...

US 90 east of I-510 is really a quiet drive. Peaceful too in some
ways.

The bridge is indeed no longer there. Old 11 on the MS side follows MS
607 to Santa Rosa, and a local road to the border. Civilians can't
drive through Stennis but this route passes to the north of Stennis.
BTW, old 11 in La. from Pearl River to MS (accessible at I-59 exit 5B)
is a really cool drive.>

The resurfacing work on the bridge was completed some time ago.>

Some fellow built it around the time of the 1984 World's Fair, in an
attempt to bank on the increased tourist flow. The concept of "a man's
home is his castle" taken to the hilt.>

Chef Highway is never congested. There is still a lot of potentially
developable land in the area inside the levee system.>

Sounds like a good excuse to put together a New Orleans roadgeek meet come
September (give or take a month).
