You've got to love this:
"
"Really I-64 exits Kentucky in the middle of the state," Wilkey said. "And
I-24 is more of a north-south than east-west corridor."

He said that leaves the state without a true east-west route, and that isn't
good for Kentucky. "

[Wilkey is Rep. Rob Wilkey, D-Scottsville ]

" Part of the road is already under construction near Somerset and London
and would likely then use the Nunn Parkway, formerly the Cumberland, to move
into southcentral Kentucky. "

PMJ: What is under construction already?

" The Interstate 66 proposal started life in the early 1990s, and a section
linking Washington, D.C., to I-81 at Front Royal, Va. is in use. "

PMJ: Another quote you've got to love. It sounds like part of the early
1990's proposal (for the record I think it was part of ISTEA) has already
been built...

A northern bypass of Somerset is under construction. U.S. Rep. Hal
Rogers--of the former Daniel Boone Parkway fame--has been pushing funding
for I-66 hard.

I did not note any work being done, but I did get off at the eastern
bypass of Somerset and took it to US 27 for the Nashville trip. Is the
existing northern bypass of Somerset being widened, as that was one of
the options, or a new alignment being built on the two proposals for
that?

IMO, I like the utilization of the existing alignment, as it utilizes
land effectively and doesn't waste more land out in the countryside.

This is pretty much true -- and there is really no true limited-access E-W
corridor using parkways, given the gap between the BG Parkway and Lexington.

Ground was broken last year on a part of the northern Somerset bypass -- I saw
no construction on a recent trip along KY 39 north of Somerset, but I think
there is work ongoing from US 27 west to the Cumberland Parkway.

The need for a direct connector is not that great, however. There is a
direct connection from the west along US 60 that, using US 60 which has
no stop lights from Frankfort and Versailles and coming from the east
is no biggie either. Using KY 922, a four-lane highway, part of KY 4,
which is limited access at that section, and US 60, motorists have
little trouble finding the Parkway as it is well signed.

On a related note, I still can't find any information on a direct
connection being originally planned north of US 60. Interstate 64 north
of Lexington was built much later than the BG Parkway, so a logical
terminus at US 60 would make sense. I know of some proposals after
Interstate 64 was built to connect the BG Parkway to that interstate
but all were turned down because of the high costs assoicated with the
roadway due to the historic farmlands and opponents. Other reasons were
cited, such as the easy access from the west and east.

The northern bypass is being built on a new alignment. Back in the fall,
after the groundbreak, I drove pretty much every route through the area, but
was unable to find any roadwork. But, apprently, there is road work
somewhere.

There is some information on the road at:
http://transportation.ky.gov/progmgmt/precon_project%20_info/special_projects/I-66/pulaski-only.htm

In related news, Gov. Fletcher unveiled new signs touting the "Future I-66
Corridor" last week. I have a picture of one of the new signs at:
