Funds released for scenic byways

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Wednesday
that it is releasing $625,588 in federal funding for improvements to
Kentucky's three National Scenic Byways, including the Country Music
Highway.

U.S. Rep. Hal Rogers, R-5th, a senior member of the House
Appropriations Committee, said, "Our three National Scenic Byways
feature some of the most stunning scenery and interesting historical
and cultural attractions in all of Kentucky. This funding will be used
for a number of improvements, including the expansion of the Redbud
Driving Trail and beautification projects along the highways."

The three National Scenic Byways are the Country Music Highway, the
Wilderness Road Heritage Highway and the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway.

Rogers helped obtain the national designation for the three roadways in
Kentucky. Such a designation makes the highways eligible for federal
grants and national recognition because of their scenic, natural,
historical, cultural, archaeological or recreational features.

Rogers said the funding will be used to assist the Southern and Eastern
Kentucky Tourism Development Association with efforts to attract
visitors and boost the economy.
