Red light cameras catch thousands of violators

By Natalie Pompilio

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

More than 5,100 drivers zipped through red lights at the intersection
of Roosevelt Boulevard and Grant Avenue during the first month cameras
aimed to catch violators were in operation.

The majority of red-light runners - 2,168 - were northbound on
Roosevelt Boulevard. Southbound drivers ran lights 1,284 times. Drivers
traveling on Grant Avenue and crossing the Boulevard also were caught:
120 were heading eastbound and 1,597 were going west.

The most active times for lawbreakers was the afternoon rush hour,
between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., officials said.

"We knew the numbers were high, but we never knew the numbers that are
there," said House Speaker John Perzel, during a press conference today
to announce the first month's findings. "I thought maybe 50 a day.
Maybe. It doubled my best and worst expectations."

The 5,169 lawbreakers were sent a photo of their license plate and a
warning. After the initial grace period ends in 90 days, drivers will
receive a citation and a $100 fine.

Officials say the cameras will reduce accidents. The intersection of
Grant and Roosevelt is one of the city's most dangerous intersections.

Parking Authority data showed there were 204 accidents there between
1997 and 2001, including three fatalities and 316 injuries. That's an
average of 40.8 accidents a year, or 3.4 a month.

Between Feb. 23 and March 22, there were two accidents at the
intersection.

City officials plan to have red-light cameras installed at the
intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Red Lion Road within the next
few weeks. The intersection of Roosevelt and Cottman Avenue will be the
next to receive cameras.
