A Temporary End to Kansas Turnpike

 I was looking thru "The Roads that Built America: The Incredible Story of
the U.S. Interstate System" (from Barnes and Noble Press) and it had a
sidebar about the construction of the turnpikes in Oklahoma and Kansas. Ok
spearheaded the superhighway effort, but was behind in construction, the
Kansas turnpike ended temporarily at the Ok border into someone's farm. The
story elaborated that the signage for the end was unclear, and thus folks
blasted right past the end into this guy's farm (along the lines of 500
crashes), he even plowed that section to provide a softer landing pad.

Anyone have any more info, snaps?

If not beaten to the punch by someone else, I will get the online edition of
the Daily Oklahoman on Monday and check the archives. I know there have been
photos, etc.

They didn't think to put up temporary "Freeway Ends" barricades at the
last exit?

I remember when I was a kid back in 60's or 70's, my folks telling a story
about traveling on a highway that ended suddenly in a corn field. I wonder
if this is
the one they meant. Granted, back in the 50's and 60's, tales of highways
ending abruptly were not uncommon.
