Question for FL roadgeeks

Tropicsprite 23 March 2005 22:45:08
Hey guys, I live in the Tampa Bay area, and I have a serious question:

Just what the hell were I-175 and I-375 built for in the first place? They
are only used during PEAK commuter hours, and even then not as much as one
would think. In addition, they appear to have been the abortive attempt to
create a "downtown loop" that would have BEEN useful.

I understand the point of some super-short 3di's, but these two boggle the
mind!

To me, they both look like glorified onramps. If they're labeled as
Interstates then I have a few long onramps I'd like to see become 3di's
also.

Florida had like 5 extra interstate miles leftover so all the short spurs
around the state were built.

I have a page on them: http://www.bayciti.net/prd/x75s.htm

Florida did not have enough funded interstate miles in the bank to
build the stretch of I-75 that it wanted, but it had 5 federally funded
miles left in 1978 so it built 175 and 375. St Petersburg proposed them
in the early 70s as city-built expressways to boost downtown growth and
development but they morphed into freeways due to the funding issues
that I-75 had.

I-75 eventually was built past Tampa because Jimmy Carter wanted to win
Florida in the 1980 election (long story)... he didnt win.

Even when I-75 was built down to Alligator Alley, that was still just
two lanes and a state route. What prompted the dualization?

Alligator Alley was built in the 1960s as a two lane tolled state road
(I think it was SR 84)... when it was built I-75 was supposed to end in
Tampa.

I-75 was extended down the west coast to the existing two lane
alligator alley in the 80s and was dualized up to interstate standards
in the late 80s - early 90s to link the Miami and Naples ends of
I-75....

I guess my question would be more along the lines of, why not just end
I-75 at FL 84? Why spend all that money for that corridor - were
traffic volumes high enough to justify Interstating it? The I-75 end on
the Miami side is small enough where it could have been an x95 or even a
FL 8xx.

The 2-lane FL-84 was plenty busy enough to warrant 4 lanes divided, and
like most other "super 2" highways, it had an excessively high rate of
fatal head-on collisions.

I-75 is the one Interstate corridor that connects the Tampa / St.
Petersburg area with the Miami / Fort Lauderdale area, two large
metropolitan areas. It was logical to connect the west and east coasts
via I-75, and a sufficient freeway right-of-way and alignment existed on
FL-84.

Hmmm....so it appears that governors hometown gets the money for the
road...why does that not surprise me...

"Saint Graham" is no longer a saint in my eyes, but just another swindler.

It certainly correlates, but it's pretty sad that once again, Tampa Bay got
shut out and now has a traffic system that is not exactly
high-end.....*sigh*
