Google Maps Beta: Take 2

K Flynn 22 March 2005 04:34:37
Pardon me if someone brought this up earlier (I searched and didn't
find any mention) but as I was looking up photos of abandoned road
segments I found that in many cases, Google Maps does not show rivers
or watercourses.

Twice today this was a problem, starting with Huntingdon PA (Juniata
River passes through town but does not show up on Google Maps) and
Clarion PA (the old US322 segments on either side of the river show
where the Clarion River *should* be on the map, but it does not appear
either).

Q: How big does a river have to be before it can be googled on a map?

A: Dunno, but out of curiosity I did a Google Map of my old hometown
Easton PA and followed the Lehigh River upstream via the map. The
Lehigh disappears from Google Maps just south of Palmerton, basically
at the Northampton-Carbon county line. But on Mapquest, you can follow
the Lehigh all the way to its source up near Pocono Springs.

Same with the South Platte River through Denver; Google Maps goes up
river only as far as its exit from the mountains at Platte Canyon, near
the Lockheed Martin rocket plant. But on Mapquest, you can follow the
Platte all the way up to its source in South Park.

Well, that sucks. But, I noticed that too; it doesn't show the river
about 1/2 a mile from my house.

I noticed that the other day when I first started browsing around the
site. Invisible rivers, as well as mis-shaped (or less) lakes, bays,
etc., would kinda make it hard for those going fishing or on other
water-related outings to make their way accurately if they just use
Google.
