Kentucky to mark future I-66

H . B . Elkins 21 March 2005 07:04:03
Not sure if there is an official release floating around out there anywhere, but
Kentucky is getting ready
to mark the Cumberland Parkway as the future route of I-66. The governor is
going to be in Glasgow
and Columbia next Wednesday for sign unveiling ceremonies, and I'm sure some
sort of official release
will be sent out afterwards. I may go to one or more events to take notes for a
gubernatorial
groundbreaking that I'm taking part in week after next for the KY 15 project in
Breathitt County. I think
Jeff Carlyle is going and can give us a report on where the signs will be placed
(and hopefully photos of
them!!!)

Hi HB!
This is JPI! Are you going to be in Glasgow, KY this wednesday? If so
what time? I may take a drive up that way to check out the ceremony
too! Scince I live in Lebanon, TN it is only about an hour and a half
up to Glasgow from here.
Thanks for the info!

About time...Texas has had Future I-69 signs up in spots along US 59 almost
since the corridor was announced, even though it's not all that much closer to
any of it opening any time soon. ;-)

So, how will I-66 get from Kentucky to where it currently ends at I-81
in Strasburg, VA? Would it involve corridor H (US 48)? Or will they be
discontinuous ala I-76?

I doubt if I will make it to the Glasgow event if I go to any of them. The one
in Columbia is closest to me, and I'm in the planning stages for a
groundbreaking of my own, plus I'm off work Friday due to a holiday (can you say
roadtrip?????) so my being at Glasgow is not likely.

The original I-66 proposal called for an extension of the existing highway west
from its terminus in Virginia. Andy Field has an excellent summary of the
proposal at http://www.aaroads.com/high-priority/corr03.html, although a lot of
the links have been taken down that used to be on that page.

There was a big battle in Kentucky as to the routing of I-66. Former Congressman
Scotty Baesler wanted it to follow I-64, the Bluegrass and Western Kentucky
parkways. Congressman Hal Rogers wanted it to follow the Daniel Boone and
Cumberland parkways and KY 80. Rogers won that political fight.

Without the coast-to-coast aspect of a new I-66, Kentucky's project is truly
unnecessary. The existing highways (US 68, KY 80, Western Kentucky, Natcher,
Cumberland and Daniel Boone parkways) are perfectly suitable for current and
future levels of traffic. This "interstate" will begin somewhere near I-55 or
I-57 in Missouri and will end at a proposed new alignment of US 52 in West
Virginia. It will not even connect two interstates (because US 52 will never be
signed as I-73 or I-74).

There are some portions of this route that could be beneficial -- such as a new
bridge across the Mississippi River and an improved route from the
Missouri-Kentucky border to Paducah -- but it is mostly unnecessary if not
applied in the scope of a new coast-to-coast route. A direct route from Hazard
to Pikeville would be nice, but the construction from Pikeville east to US 52
parallels US 119, which has had millions of dollars spent to upgrade it as part
of the ARC system. There is no need for two east-west routes across Pike
County.

 Hi HB,
Thanks for the info, I probably won't go up that way on wednesday,
mainly due to the wife and I are planning a BIG road trip back up to
southern PA in 2 weeks including side trips to Pittsburgh and Atlantic
City. I would like to go back up to Glasgow at some point and take a
drive along the Cumberland especailly if "future I-66 corridor" signs
will be up along the highway.

Now, let's wait to see when KY DOT will put future I-69 signs along the gaps
of Pennyrille Parkway and Western Kentucky parkway ;-)>

How would the BGP <-> I-64/75 connection been made had that northern
corridor been chosen? I thought that any thoughts of that had been
killed off long ago by the horse farm owners.

The markers for both are shown on the last couple of KYDOT highway maps, too.

That'll likely be a sign that InDOT finally agreed on just how to get I-69
from Indianapolis to Evansville. ;-) (The only part of the Pennyrile I
usually see is near the south (current) terminus where it crosses the old US
68 route through Hopkinsville.)

That was never really discussed.
