The $240 million reconstruction of the Crosstown/Interstat­e Hwy. 35W
interchange will go forward on schedule because of a ruling Thursday by
Transportation Commissioner Carol Molnau.

Both the state and the city of Minneapolis will get what they want,
despite earlier concerns about delays or a protracted political battle.

As the state wanted, the project will begin on schedule in 2006. As
Minneapolis wanted, a bus rapid transit station at E. 46th St. will be
part of the project.

In a nutshell, the project will continue as scheduled (construction
beginning in early 2006). While the ruling allows MnDOT to proceed, it
gave Minneapolis got some of what they wanted, namely a BRT station at
46th St, additional noise walls, and an aesthetic design for the
Minnehaha Creek bridges (which will be replaced for the new roadway).
There's also language in the ruling that directs MnDOT to accelerate a
related project: extension of the HOV/BRT lane up to downtown
Minneapolis, including access changes and a new transit station at Lake
St. Minneapolis wanted full funding for the HOV/BRT up to downtown
from the get-go, but that really is a seperate project.
