I-90 corridor roadside facilities study

 The webpages for this study went online recently. The Bangor and
Sparta rest areas have the last lannon stone buildings left. These
basic rest area buildings have a men's, a women's and a small
mechanical room. The restrooms have outside access as there is no
lobby. They were the original WI rest area building design and at one
time there were 18 of this design.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has initiated a
study to evaluate roadside facilities along the I-90 corridor from the
Wisconsin/Minnesota­ state line at La Crosse to Tomah.

The purpose of the study is to develop a long-range plan for modern
roadside facilities along the I-90 corridor that serve the traveling
public, enhance freeway operations and safety, and are compatible with
local land use planning.

The study will evaluate options for improving facilities at their
present location and/or developing facilities at new locations.

Four existing roadside facilities along the I-90 corridor will be
evaluated:

La Crosse travel information center, located on French Island, mile
marker 1 eastbound.
West Salem safety and weight enforcement facility (truck weigh
station), located at mile marker 10 eastbound.
Rest area #15, located at mile marker 20 eastbound, east of Bangor.
Rest area #16, located at mile marker 21 westbound, west of Sparta.
