Funds approved for US 19 and US 64 in NC

Thousands of vehicles travel winding U.S. 19, which goes through the
nation of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

But the highway needs more guardrails. Sometimes rocks fall from the
hilly outcroppings above. Water doesnÂ’t drain properly, leaving
puddles. All this makes for dangerous driving.

The House has approved $18 million to make the road safer as part of a
six-year, $284 billion transportation bill.

The Cherokees said Tuesday the money will be used to continue work
along the road and would create as many as 150 jobs for the tribe and
surrounding areas.

...

A transportation bill that Congress approved in the late 1990s set
aside $15 million for U.S. 19 and the Cherokees chipped in $3 million.
Parts of the road now are being repaved. Hicks said more money might
be needed in the future to finish all the upgrades.

A new transportation bill passed the House late last week. The Senate
is expected to take it up in April. President Bush then must sign the
bill for it to become law, meaning Western North Carolina isnÂ’t yet
assured of getting the money.

...

Another WNC road project listed in the House bill is $3 million to
build passing lanes on Interstate (typical reporter mistake; they mean
US) 64 in Transylvania County, between state Route 107 in Cashiers and
U.S. 178 in Rosman.

“I am extremely pleased that I was able to secure funds for these
transportation projects,” U.S. Rep. Charles Taylor, R-Brevard, said
through his spokeswoman. “I look forward to working with my colleagues
in the Senate to protect these worthy projects as the bill moves
forward.”
