Roadside geology of I-8 in CA

The Roadtrippin' Moose 16 March 2005 09:04:50
Hi all, I'm new. It's nice to know this group exists - I thought I was
the only one who took photos of road signs.

I'm also a former geologist, and I had a question about the roadside
geology of I-8. I was driving west from El Centro to San Diego a few
months ago. Just as I got into the Cleveland National Forest, near
Jacumba, I noticed a rock formation on both sides of the road with what
appeared to be large boulders embedded in a matrix.

I guessed it might be fault gouge (ordinary rocks churned up and
broken) from the San Andreas Fault, but I thought the fault ran east of
there. Does anyone have any information or theories about the rocks
there? Or is there a better newsgroup to post this question to?

I would have stopped and looked close-up, but I had to catch a plane in
San Diego.

Thanks for your help, and I'm looking forward to talking with you more!

The San Andreas Fault hits I-8 at the eastern edge of the Imperial
(Coachella?) Valley, but California has over 18,000 separate faults,
so this could easily be a smaller one.

http://quake.usgs.gov/ might have info about which fault it was, they
have all kinds of maps of faultlines of California.

Looks like the Elsinore fault to me.
