The highway number in the shield is most definitely FHWA Gothic, not
Clearview. The shape of the 2 and the 1 are dead giveaways.

Yes, INDOT seems to have adopted the larger first letter in cardinal
directions style in the past year. The newer signage along the
reconstructed portion of I-70 west of I-465 and I-94 between the IL/IN state
line and I-65 feature these "Kansas" style cardinal directions.

Missouri is also using the Kansas style cardinal directions as is Arkansas
(new signage only).

That "N" and "H" are too close to the left and right edges of the
sign.

Seriously, it's almost like when I see that sign, the first letters I
see are the "ORT" in "NORTH".

True, but MoDOT has been using the convention for quite a while. I've only
been in MO for 5 years and it's been used as long as I've been here. INDOT
only started observing the convention in 2004.

MoDOT started using it around 1999 or 2000.

MoDOT started using it around 1999 or 2000.

MoDOT started using the convention (named "Butt Ugly Kansas Style
Signage" by Jeff Morrison) around 1992. There were a lot of button
copy signs with the convention. Some entrances to I-64 in St. Louis
(such as from Oakland or Kingshighway) use the convention with button
copy.

Interesting - I definitely do not recall that style in the Kansas
City or Columbia areas at that time.

I think there are some of that style signs still on US 63 in Columbia.
I haven't traveled US 54 around Fulton in years, but there used to be
some there. Now that you mention it, I don't recall the style in KC,
either.
