Photos Preserve the Old Florida Keys

Scott M. Kozel 10 March 2005 07:43:19
"Photos preserve 'the old Key West'"
_The Miami Herald_ - March 7, 2005
Excerpts:

'KEY WEST -- The scenes in the photographs and postcards illustrate a
past that is fast becoming distant memory along this bustling island.'

'A U.S. Navy blimp hovers low over Duval Street, marking the jubilant
end of World War I. Burlesque dancers tease from a stage, sequins
tracing their curves, smirks playing on their lips. The visiting mayor
of Havana stands next to a swaggering cadre of local police officers.'

'"It was the old Key West before the tourists came," said Teresa
Beltranena, one of four generations of Cuban "Conchs" raised in Key
West. "Everyone knew each other."'

'The images are among more than 900 that have been selected, assembled,
digitized and placed on the Internet as part of an ongoing effort to
preserve and disseminate the history of the rapidly changing Keys for
future generations.'

'Dubbed "The Virtual Roadtrip," the $53,000 project is the creation of
Monroe County library administrator Anne Layton Rice and Keys historian
Tom Hambright.'

'Although much of the cost has been underwritten by a federal grant, the
project has received extensive in-kind assistance from Florida
International University and the Florida Center for Library Automation.'

'"I wanted to create a Web site that could provide a sense of place,"
Rice said. "We are so transient here, but we also have so many people
who still have memories of our history."'

'The images span the 1890s through the 1980s, from pictures of Henry
Flagler's Overseas Railroad to photos of fishing boats racing into
Truman Annex with Cubans aboard during the 1980 Mariel boatlift.'
