Travel Headaches Worsen In Southern Kentucky March 9, 2005, 06:58 PM
The way things are going, people driving south this week to attend the SEC Tournament will probably find a lot of delays and backups.
Interstate 75 is closed at Jellico Mountain because of a four-inch depression that showed up last week in the southbound lane and the emergency stopping lane. Traffic was restricted to the passing lane, but the slide that caused the depression became worse and both southbound lanes were closed. There is now a 30-mile detour southbound while the northbound emergency lane is bolstered and a divider and reflectors are installed.
There are currently two detours being recommending by the Kentucky Department of Transportation:
1. Take Exit 29 at Corbin. You'll take US 25 east to Tazewell, where you'll connect with Highway 33, which will take you into Knoxville. When you get to Knoxville you'll want to take I-640 to the I-75 interchange.
2. Take Exit 29 at Corbin to US 25 east. Go south to Harrogate where you'll get on Tennessee 63. Take that south to Exit 134, which is Lafollette.
You can also get off at Exit 38 in London and take it to US 25 South, which will take you to US 25 E in Corbin.
AAA of the Blue Grass/Kentucky is also offering alternate suggestions for UK fans. They include taking the Bluegrass Parkway west to Elizabethtown where you can connect with I-65 south. Take I-65 south to Nashville. In Nashville you'll want to take I-24 east to Chattanooga and then I-75 to Atlanta. The entire trip is about 450 miles.
AAA Also suggests US 27 south to I-40 east to I-75 south, but they warn this route may have long delays.
You can call AAA at 859-233-1111 or 1-800-568-5222 for assistance with route information and updated road conditions.
